if your opinion and experience, what are the most reliable hds? make a list from best to worse.

In the past 8 years or so I have bought around 10 -15 maxtor drives. Even my old ones are still running - none have ever failed. Both seagates I had went bad, but I have not bought any more for three to 4 years. I also had 3 WD go bad, 2 8.4 and a 4 gig drive. Both seagate and WD are great with RMA's though. I also have one IBM and it is good, but I am a little afraid of them now after the 75GXP problems. Just my opinion.
 
I've got a bunch of old maxtor drives up and running too, so I like maxtor. But, you can probably take your pick from most well known drive manufacturs and come out ok. Occasionally someone gets a bad drive, but thats more chance than anything.
 
One wd i have crapped out, another sounds like it's almost gone, my maxtor is running great, and I think I'll stick with them for my future purposes.
 
i've had good luck with maxtors. i think that finding a good, solid hd is just a matter of whatever you seem to have the best luck with. 🙂
 
This is what I call a Ford versus Chevy thing... but my experience with hard drives is about the same as freeway's.

Seagate - 1 and it was DOA.
Western Digital 5 total and 3 crapped out within 18-24 months under normal home use.
Maxtor 6 total and 1 died after 30 months, but it was a spare that lived a hard life of being moved and tossed around.

I look for a good performing drive that I can feel confident about. There may be others that are faster but my next drive will be another Maxtor, unless they do something dumb before then.
 
I have stuck with Maxtor but now that I am just RMA'ing my second drive I'm starting to think about IBM / WD again.

fujitsu, fast and quiet.
The other drive either fast and noisy or slow and quiet. sad.
 
maxtor purchased quantum
i got a quantum fireball
and 3 maxtors

broke a seagate by dropping it
and a maxtor broke on me once just out of the blue one day
but i think maxtor drives are good
and agree that pretty much any name brand drives are pretty good these days
 
I hate that maxtor bought quantum, because I despise maxtor despite what they do for HDD technology, and now I dont know whether the drives are using quantums HDD designs or maxtors, or some hodgepodge of both....

Of all the drives I have bought, the ONLY drives that I have still going today are ALL quantums. I have bought 3 seagates, 6 Quantums, 4 Maxtors, 3 IBMs, 6 Western digitals....

MY thoughts ... to date:
all 6 quantum drives still functional
1 Seagate RMAd, no problems since
4 Western digitals RMAd, always got a better drive... hehe but their quality is supposedly going back up from when I bought them regularly
3 IBMs still functional, 2 are new 60gxps and I am getting leery with all of the negative posts
4 maxtors 1 RMAd, 1 sucked balls and was suppost to be a top performer....it was slow as a tird. A newer 30gb drive too... it just did maxtors name in for me.

So all in all the winner is:
Quantu...Maxto...umm...Maxtum?...Quantor????? DAMMIT

So, if I were buying a drive today, Id get a new Western Digital and try my luck, or Id get a fujitsu or seagate SCSI drive.
