most reliable cdrw

it doesn't have to be the fastest, the cheapest, the prettiest, or even the quietest, though that'd be nice. all i'm looking for is the cdrw that makes the best quality burns with a decent variety of media. what's your opinion?

any other opinions? i know lite-ons are currently the darlings of the cdrw market, but i've found less than favorable reviews when it comes to writing quality (eg it slows down to 24 writing, reading, errors on discs burned make drive unreadable). anything else?

Plextors are what people look for if they want "quality". They have the reputation of making quality drives that burn correctly and at the speeds the drives are rated for. I've bought two Lite-On drives and I'm glad that I did. They don't cost much but can match Plextor's quality when it comes to burning CDs. All the reviews that I've read praised Lite-On drives for their write speeds. The only downside to the Lite-On drives are that they still only burn at 12X when writing to CD-RWs. Yamaha drives have broken that barrier when they came out with the CRWF1, which rewrites at 24X. However, I read a MaximumPC issue that tested the drive and it came in slower than the Lite-On. Another name that I'm going to throw out is TDK. They also make pretty good drives. They rip audio CDs at incredibly fast speeds. Hope this is the info you're looking for. 🙂

I havn't had any problems with my lite-on 40x burner. Generally burns a full cd in around 3 minutes. I've never encountered any errors on discs I've burned. I wouldn't spend more money than necessary, I'm sure you'll be happy with a lite-on.

Plextor is one of the best out there but you also pay a good price for them too. Lite-on is the best overall budget burner out there.

I'll 2nd that 🙂

the consensus i've seemed to reach from other boards where i asked this question is that it doesn't matter so much which burner you buy, but the quality of the media. so any rebadged 40 or 48 speed lite-on that happens to be on sale this week will suffice as long as i use tys?

Never had a bad burn with my Lite-on 40x12x48, ofcourse, I only use quality media..... i've found Princo CDR's to be good. The 16X one burn at 40X fine for me 🙂

Cheers

I've owned two LG CDRWs and have been very pleased withthem. I have read that Plextor is top off the line though.

Plextor is a tad overhyped. When the 161040a came out, I got one. Quite a while after that a firmware came out that corrected the intensity of the buring laser to prevent premature failure. I wonder how many people got burned on that one. With the price of LiteOn's, you almost can't go wrong.

Any opinions on CDRW *media* would also be appreciated here. I'm looking for a reliable brand that plays VCD on my Sony DVP-S360 DVD player. The player database at www.vcdhelp had only a few listed.

You'll never go wrong with TY (Taiyo Yuden) Fuji or Memorex CDs (everyone on AT raves about Fujis 😛). Just look on the spindle to make sure they're from Japan. You can usually tell by the white or black caps on top of the spindle.

I have Sony, Plextor, TEAC burners, and did own a Lite-ON.
I mostly use for data, and readability and accuracy is my concern. I returned the Lite-On after it burned a few files that had errors. The same files were burned and read by the TEAC without errors.
Also the Lite-On had trouble reading files burned by other burners. Not so with the TEAC, Sony, Plextor.

I prefer the TEAC for its speed and accuracy.
The Sony (mfg by Sony), Plextor are also good. Lite-On I would rate last of these for what I need.

Yamaha also makes good, reliable CDRW drives. I have a couple 4x Yamahas, an 8x, and a 16x (SCSI and IDE) that are all running great. Yamaha's newer models also has a "music master" mode which is supposed to burn high quality/low jitter CDA discs at 1x. Their latest CRW-F1 is also supposed to make excellent quality burns although they cost substantially more than Lite-On, et. al.

My main system has a Sanyo BP5 (ultra SCSI) that I've been very happy with. I've had it for a little over a year and it's only made 2 coasters out of hundreds of CDs burned.

Plextor gets my vote. My 16x10x40 has withstood over well over 1000 full cd-r burns so far (i've used over 10-100 spindle cd-r's), and at least a few hundred cd-rw's writes and erases. No complaints, no coasters!😉

Lite-on makes the new TDK cyclone. Liteon drives have 70,000 power on hours @ 25% duty cycle. Plextor's have 60,000. The last Plextor I used was a 8x write. It worked fine even after 4 years. My Liteon 32/12/40 works great. I wanted the Yamaha cause of the giant buffer, but settled for this one after reading a few reviews. I use TDK cdr's.

Teac compares well with all the brands mentioned....they just don't get all the press of the others.

Super6

i have a RICOH 1 and that has been FINE no probs yet.....

it is a 32x 12x 40x and it is SWEEEEEEEET 🙂
