Most Reliable Car under $16k ? Im thinking about Mazda Protege5 2003 model...

First of all.. i tried to search about this topic as much as I could online, and I would like to hear what you guys/gals think about this.

Currently, our family car, "96 Dodge NEON" is starting to cause little problems. It had few problems down the road but nothing major. (Broken transmission hose, brakes, rediator replacement.. ) but now it seems to have problem with transmission (its auto) .

I've taken it to an honest auto mechanic (yeah.. Im lucky 😀) and after going thru the car and checking different things, he told me the transmission needs to be fixed and there are other problems as well so he suggested that we just ride it as long as we could and purchase a new car instead of fixing it.

At first I was looking at cars around $20k, and since im young 😀 first cars that came to my head were RSX and WRX..
and it seems like RSX base model can be had easily for under $20 k with some nice options. I test drove it, and I loved its handling and features. Since it was step up from NEON, I had no problems with its performance either.. (it was auto with sports shift). although I like WRX more for its 4 door and all wheel drive (i live north west subs of chicago), the OTD price was little too high..

So I started to look around $15k, since this will be a family car anyways, and I'll get my wrx(sti perhaps 😀) in stick when i get a car JUST for me 😛.
And so far Mazda Protege5 seems to be the best value for me. I've looked into Honda CIVIC LX but it just looks too boring..
Mazda seems to be great except some ppl questioned its reliability, especially with its transmission... is that true?

What do u guys think? basically this HAS to be an automatic, and 4 door preferably. It will be driven in all wheater (snow, rain, but not much hills here) and its reliability is VERY high on the list.

Thank you in advance for any comments/suggestions.

A reliable car isn't going to be "fun/sporty" to drive.

It's going to give you at least 15 years/200,000 miles of problem free driving from point A to point B back and back a few thousand times.

Reliable = 2003 Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic

another vote for a corolla. it doesn't matter if its an LE, CE , etc. toyota gives you your moneys worth.

You should see if your local Honda dealer has any Civic's on clearance.

I've seen 2002 Honda Civic EX automatics, yes the EX not the DX, VP or LX but the EX on clearance for $15,500 brand new.

Actually, it can be... take a previous generation Civic... slap some wider wheels/tires on it... instant fun to toss around. I dunno about the reliability of the new Proteges but they actually an oldish platform so there should be data about their reliability and issues.

The Ford Focus SVT might fit your bill if you can talk the dealer down and don't mind a hatch. It's not a regular Focus at all... interior is nicer, handles so much better, shifts nicer, and has a good deal more pop. All the owners I've talked to are quite happy. Reliability is still a question mark though.

Also in the segment is the Sentra SE-R, I know a buncha friends that have their gf or themselves own one as their daily transport. Also good pop from the engine and handles quite well in the SpecV trim. There are some definite fans of the car on this board. Most again haven't really encountered problems.

But for under 20K for max performance... nothing beats the upcoming SRT4. It seems a lot nicer than a regular Neon from the interior pics, but they also mentioned that the supportive buckets which are great for racing aren't so great for long hauls. I don't think you'll be able to put that one over on the Mrs. Mini Cooper is a great car... prolly not the best family car either. Toyota Matrix... I hear about build quality problems... handling is rollypolly but plenty of pop from the high-revving sport engine.

Are you also looking at used cars? A4 1.8T?

oh, and the se-r sucks balls! balls!

im not looking for a used car.. i seem to always have bad luck with used cars... 🙁

.. and is a car sucking balls.. good?

I also drove corolla, the interior was clean and it was just .. boring, but ok. similar reaction for me on civic.

family cars = boring

you're driving your family around, yo udon't need to be flashy =P

no, its an awful car! don't get one! don't be like all those wannabe ricers!

actually theres another model of the sentra that uses the SR25DET... sentra limited or something... might want to look into that. the ride isn't as stiff, which is good for family car. and the seats are probably designed for someone with a waist bigger than 25".

though i'm still convinced wagons are better for most people

when my dad was a GM at mazda, a mechanic he had working for him told me never to buy one. The tranny's go on them like crazy.

dont know if there is truth to this or not, but i wont buy a mazda.

You said you tried and like the WRX... did you try a wagon version of it's weaker twin? (2.5 RS)

Also lost in the mix... does your little lady want autos only? The SE-R does offer an auto...

If you want an example of a "family car" that's as far away from boring as left from right? Audi RS6. It's a normal looking midsize wagon... it's not just wicked fast... it's "satanically EVIL" fast. Heck, if you had the cash... I know a lot of guys at autoXs that compromise and get WRX wagons for the family.

So how would you like your ass kicking? 😉

the Se-r is a GREAT car.. can easily be had for 17-18k, nicely equiped, is a blast to drive and out performs everything in its price range. of course, the se-r specV is nicer, but since you want an auto-- guess it isnt a choice.

now... back to taking care of el fenix. :disgust:

yeah, the 2.5 limited.. i guess it sorta replaces the SE 2.0.. its not bad, pretty much the same performance as the Se-r, with a less sporty suspension and ride in mind, doesnt have the aggressive front though.

I'll throw in another vote for a Civic or (my personal favorite in the value market) the Toyota Corolla, the new 2003 models are pretty nice. If you want a good, cheap, reliable family car, they are the best ones out there. Oh, and don't get a Mazda anything unless you like visiting your mechanic a lot, they are fun to drive, but none too reliable compared to Hondas and Toyotas. And please, for the love of God, do not get a Focus. I know everyone seems to be in love with them, but they are not fun to drive and they are really low quality. The Civic and the Corolla especially make you feel like you got a deal, and many other value cars out there make you feel like you got exactly what you paid for. JMHO of course.

Uhh where do you get your info from?

The new Sentra limited edition has the same engine as the SE-R (QR25DE) NOT THE SR25DET. The SR20DE was in the older Sentra SEs and older SE-Rs (early 90s).

The Sentre Limited Edition is pretty much a sleeper of a Sentra with the 165hp 4-cyl. Its only offered in the States though not Canada (not yet anyway).

yeah, i was just actually talking to him about that-- nissan never even made an SR25DET, only a sr20det.

more sentra facts 🙂

Subaru 2.5TS!!! It's Subaru's basic AWD wagon. I'd bet you could find a new one for $15k or so. For 16k or so you can get an Outback Sport, which is AWD and has a much better interior and a firmer suspension. You can get new Civic SI's for 15k in PDX now, and you can get new Jeep Wranglers for $12k or so nicely equipped. All will be fun to drive, yet somewhat practical.

Another vote for the Corolla, it has a nice engine and a good interior. It feels like you?re driving a car a lot more expensive than it is.

PS. Kilgor has 2003 Corolla 😀
