Most RELIABLE 80 GB HD?

I'm using a 80gb WD 800BB hdd which has been in use for like 4 months now. Without a single problem at all. Most my hdd's I ever owned where WD and I never did had one fail on me yet.

Maxtor should be on the top of the list. My 80GB 120GXP has been running strong for one month now.

I had a WD 800BB die after about 2 months. They replaced it, but it took almost a month. Make sure you always back up your data!!! I also have a Maxor 80 and 160 GB that apear to be doing OK. RRRRRRRR

While I dont have an 80GB drive, I can answer your Maxtor question - Yes, mine has been reliable for me (my Maxtor is 30Gb if that matters).

Had 2 Maxtors die on me, one right away and the other 30GB waited until it had been around a while and was full before it decided to take all my data with it. I no longer trust Maxtor myself. Never had a Western Digital go bad. Now I have all Western Digitals, I have a 13 GB, a 27GB a 40GB and a 60GB all running fine, the 13GB has been around for many years.

I have 2xWestern Digital 800BB drives in RAID 0, they see heavy constant use as they hold my movie server space, I have never had problems, very fast, no data corruption, i have had one for 6 months, the other for 4, love them both. Oh and btw, many (i am not implying all so please don't start flaming) hard drives fail due to poor cooling or devices piled on top of one another, I see it all the time here at school, someone's drive dies, I take one look in their box and touch the case and almost burn my hand. Hard drives need to be babied, as much as your processor as they're pretty damned important, I run 4x80mm fans over mine and they stay chilli to say the least and I never have problems. I reccomend looking into hard drive cooling options, it does help, especially if you're in an unaircondiditoned place.

I have 2 referbished Western Digital hard drives now, because the originals went bad...

1 40gig 7200RPM WD and 1 60gig 7200RPM...

Took forever to get the drives back, but the referbished actually work a whole heck of a lot better, and have been performing very well, so I guess I can't complain...

They do work great when they're running 🙂

My vote goes for Maxtor, currently have 6 ranging from 15 gig to 60 gig not a problem with any of them. I also have 2 IBM?s GXP75?s that are running fine for over a year, (waiting for them to go south). The only HDDs I?ve had problems with were Western Digital?s and a Fusitu. Would I buy Western Digital again, sure, every manufacture is going to have a few bad ones and hopefully the newer designs are more reliable than the ones I had go bad.

Put the names in a hat

No company wants to make a drive that will fail, without internal failure % figures you might as well be asking who make the most lucky drive.

If you buy a Maxtor and it goes bad you will say ohhh Maxtor is evil the same as if you bought a IBM or WD.

It seems there is no more a clear line between the different brands, as their technology advanced so much, the diffferentiation between them decreases. No more reason to pick one brand over another(with that said, I still think maxtor suck 😛 . 10 maxtor died in a row)

What I think you should think about is the after sale service( Read as RMA service). It seems western digital and maxtor have excellent RMA serivce, in comparison to IBM or Seagate

Funny how things change. A year ago a thread like this would have generated 75% IBM responses. After their 45 GB 75GXP mess things are a bit different.
