most quiet fans ?

hi

looks like i will be looking for some extra case fans and maybe a new cooler for ATI 9700 Pro.

what i would like to know is which ones are the most quiet ? so can someone list some brands/models or post a link to the manufacturer/reseller where they can be obtained ?

Basically anything under 21 dB should be quiet enough so that you can't hear it unless you are close

got any suggestions about a cooler for ATI Radeon AIW 9700 Pro ? i would like something more effective then what came retail and naturally it needs to be quiet.


also, this may sound strange, but are tehre any RAM specific cooling devices available anywhere ? my RAM is puting out a lot of heat for some reason and fans arent too effective it seems.

I've tried a bunch of fans to find ones that I thought were quiet. I like 80mm Panaflo L1A's. There's no motor or bearing noise. I bought mine at All Electronics. And like some others mentioned, some fans undervolt really well.

For the 9700 pro, if you want something that's ready to go, Zalman makes a heatpipe that works well. If you are overclocking the card put a fan next to it.
 
I just ordered 6 L1a's from allelectronics.com
That's the only 80mm fan I would recommend unless you are comfortable undervolting other fans.

Actually, the ones I got from All Electronics came with two pin connectors that fit well on mb headers or 3 to 4 pin adapters if you shave the little guide off one side of the two pin connector.

Yellow (12v)
Black (12v)
Black 5v)
Red (5v)
Instead of using the "top" yellow and black wires to power the fan, you use the "bottom" red and black wires. Check articles on 7v to see how to physically move the pins. If the fan has bare leads, you could just plug them into the smaller connectors like floppy drives use.
 
drednox, go with the 80mm panaflos. They are recognized for being very quite. I have some and can assure you that they are.

 
There is a person on Ebay that sells the panaflos with the connectors on the ends. I have purchased from him twice now and I've been very happy with the price that I've paid for these. It's somewhat hard to find these with the connectors but I've had luck here. I've purchased 8 fans from him now.

I heard from an esteemed colleague that you need at least 30 CFM to effectively cool, and 40 is optimal. The fan y'all are talkin about is only 24 or something like that (too lazy to check again). There is a high volume panaflo that pumps out around 40 CFM and is still only 32 dB (which I'm assured that you can't hear). Of course this is all hearsay, unless someone who's smart wants to back me up.
 
Sorry but your colleague's advice is wrong.
You only need enough cfm to cool your system to a point that satisfies you.
different situations call for different setups. There's no minimum cfm.
 
Not only is there no minimum cfm, a 32dBA level of noise is quite audible. When you get near 21-22dBA it starts becoming inaudible. Anything in the mid-20's is quiet, but for people who are serious about silence, only the lower 20's will do.

You guys are right. And its not just the power of the fan but how you use it (so to speak). My system is overclocked like mad and I only use panaflo L1A's, even on my cpu heatsink.
