Most promising SPORTS careers ended/halted by injury?

Ken Griffey and Terrell Davis come to mind.

Griffy was "on pace" to break Aaron's record, while TD had just come off a 2000 yard season, becoming the 4thh player to ever do so..but retired just a few years later.

Tony Conigliaro, Boston Red Sox.

Tony C was the youngest home run champ in AL history (age 20) and was the youngest player to hit 100 career homers (age 22). Projecting his HR per At-bat numbers until his late 30's would indicate a total of between 500-600 career home runs.

In his third season, he was hit in the face by a pitch and missed the rest of the season plus all of the next year. He was never the same and played only 2 1/2 more seasons before his career ended after two comebacks.

a la Kirby Puckett

Ralph Sampson
Sam Bowie
(both taken above Michael Jordan in the draft, IIRC)

Edit: Sampson was in 83, Bowie was in 84 (along with Jordan)

You know, a lot of people mentioned so far had nice long careers. It's a stretch to say someone like Ken Griffey Jr (still active after 15 seasons) or Dominique Wilkins (over 12 seasons played) had a promising career ended/halted by injury.

Sandy Koufax had a short career, but still had amazing stats.

Terrell Owen's career is suffering from his severe case of cranial rectitus.
