In 2006, the Bulldogs recorded the highest profit margin of any athletic program in the country (according to the EADA report [3]), pulling in USD$23.9 million, and also recorded another highly-successful year on the field.

Anyone want to bet that's due to ND football not having a conf. affiliation and thus not having to share it's bowl payouts? Yes, they lose constantly, but they lose in the big ones and get better payouts.
AFAIK the Sugar Bowl paid out $17 mil to each team. ND keeps all $17 mil of its share. LSU has to share with the sec (13 way split... 12 teams + sec itself) and thus gets a mere fraction of the payout.

Actually, Notre Dame only gets 4.5 million now from BCS games. That number is minor compared to their national TV and radio deals.

I think it's interesting how certain sports (mens basketball/football) carry the load for the entire athletic department and how women's sports usually operate at a loss. Even at Maryland the #1 ranked women's basketball team who won the NCAA championship last year, loses money if you just look at that department by itself (Revenue = 182k, Expenses = $1.9 million)
