most powerful handgun? S&W .50 magnum?

They had a little bit on foxnews about this gun. Looked on smithandwesson.com and it looks like a beast. Twice the "power" of a desert eagle .50ae ?

I've shot a few rounds with the deagle, I can't imagine something like this... "stop a charging bear"

thoughts?

who cares? it's worthless as anything but a novelty gun anyway. If you want a gun that's worthwhile for anything other than a conversation piece, you buy one of 5 calibers: .357 Magnum, .38 Special, 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP.

I don't really understand. Why would a .45 be "better" than a .50? Does that 0.05 really make the gun sh!tty?

because the .45 isn't so overpowered that it's useless in real life situations

With the claimed muzzle energy like a .308 Winchester high powered rifle in a gun that only weighs about 4.5 lbs, I wouldn't want to shoot the .500 S&W at all (unless a bear was about to get me). The recoil energy is only somewhat less than that of big dangerous game cartridges but with a similar or greater recoil velocity and all this taken with no rifle stock for shoulder support.

For most people, that's way too much recoil and muzzle blast to be subjected to. You would probably end up killing yourself in addition to the velociraptor. Maybe if the gun weight was doubled and a really good recoil compensator added (not just for muzzle flip), then I would watch someone else try it. 🙂

Here's one place to do recoil comparisons: Recoil Calculator

You forgot 357SIG 🙂
