so i'm lookin' through my computer, and I say I did a pretty good job of filtering so much crap off my comp, I can't even remember...

"AOL _ GET STARTED"

I seem to recall when Windows 95 came out there was a rush for shady developers to cash in quickly. Lots of people made programs that didnt actually DO anything but sold very well because they put big ass "WINDOWS 95 COMPATIBLE!!!" stickers on the box.

OMG. I use to do ad hoc computer support for my old law firm and as fast as I could reformat and reinstall the sectretaries' malfunctioning computers, they would install the damn purple monkey.

WTF was it suppose to do?

SoftRAM95. It truly did nothing. If you don't remember, look it up for a good .

The product was rated the third "Worst Tech Product of All Time" by PC World in 2006.

So that begs the question of course...

Edit: it's AOL: http://www.pcworld.com/article...2/article.html#softram

Nice article - I remember most of that stuff, but there's a few I hadn't heard of. AOL did everything it could to earn that top spot. I remember when I called to cancel my subscription once my free hours were up (right after college) the customer service lady asked why I was cancelling my subscription. I politely explained to her why it is that AOL sucks, after which she asked me what I meant by the word "browser", and once I explained that heady concept, tried to win me back with the hard sell "but we have webpages about nascar!"

Yep.

I take my original statement back: clippy is the most useless bit of software ever produced.

eat up resources and be a retarded nuisance?

It was supposed to remind you of barney the dinosaur in a bizzarre form of psychological warfare 😉
To that end, I would say it was far from pointless and seems to have succeeded!
