The Kinks put out You Really Got Me years before any of those bands existed. I didn't say The Kinks were metal, just that they did the first metal song ever. They invented it, others took it and ran with it.

See, for me, it doesn't get any better than 'U2-War'. That is their best album and probably ranks in my top 5 albums of all time.

You watch a Coldplay concert and you'd think they are the second coming of Christ...in reality they are just shitty modern U2 lite. U2 is one of those bands that made great music...music that was political and powerful in its day...just like the Beatles.

There isn't a band I've heard in over a decade that could hold a candle to either of those groups in their prime.

That January, the San Francisco band Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran's classic "Summertime Blues," from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording.

Cream was way louder than the Kinks. They weren't heavy metal either.

The Yardbirds came closer than the Kinks ever did.
 
Anyone who says The Beatles are overrated is clueless.

I think when we talk about The Beatles many people over look how much quality stuff they put out in such a short time frame.

In just eight years they released 12 of the greatest albums of all time. The Rolling Stone magazine list of greatest albums included 10 of these 12 on it.

No one else even comes close.

Your first sentence accurately describes Black Sabbath, and your second one credits Led Zeppelin with influencing the vocal style of a bunch of false metal bands. A compelling argument you have not given.
 
The Kinks didn't create heavy metal, they just brought about its inception via 'You Really Got me Now"

Trying to claim that anyone created anything in music is really nuts since every one just builds on those who came before them.

Without "You Really Got Me" we may never have gotten to heavy metal, but the song itself was not a heavy metal song.

I also don't think that Zeppelin was heavy metal since they were more of a blues based band.

The Kinks were neither. They were straight ahead rock 'n roll elevated greatly by Ray Davies' sweet sociological/topical songwriting chops.

Just listen to 20th Century Man,The Village Green Preservation Society, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, or Lola if you doubt my description. Hell, even Davies himself said he was a rocker.

Several personal faves from their overlooked and vastly underrated (imho) album Arthur, such as Yes Sir, No Sir, Some Mother's Son, and Mr. Churchill Says.

I know you're all busy and important guys, but if you can spare a couple of minutes and have never heard it, at least listen to Yes Sir, No Sir.

The Kinks were great rockers, and always thought of themselves as such. Calling them either proto punk or metal is just stooopid retro-poseur nonsense.

I saw 'em live a bunch of times. They never disappointed.
 
Let's get this straight. I NEVER CLAIMED The Kinks were metal. I simply said they invented it. They were the very first band to use what has become known as the power chords in a song. It was 1964. Blue Cheer did that in '69.

The Kinks are all over the map, yet remain musical, which is why they are great.

All the other bands mentioned may have driven heavy metal, but then we can argue about Black Sabbath, Deep purple, and Judas Priest and Led Zeppelin.

I was reading an article on this. I always liked Led Zeppelin. Didn't think they were OMG awesome, but if they were on the radio, the channel surfing stopped there.
Now I am pretty disgusted.

Had a chance to and passed. I'm sure I'll watch it some day. Despite my repeated responding to these threads about sixties music and such, I don't live there. It just happens to be something I know a thing or two about.
