Just curious ,do you hate the white stripes as well?

Not a fan but I don't hate them. Besides, they don't have anywhere near the critical acclaim Nirvana had and so they'd have to be much worse to be as overrated.

See this is the problem I like Nirvana I just don't see the hype. If Cobain hadn't decided to snack on buckshot I doubt they would have had the "legacy" they do.

People have this expectation that Nirvana would carry on forever and be epic. However the evidence points to Cobain wanting to stop Nirvana and try other things

In terms of marketing it was pure genius to end Nirvana like he did frozen in time at the apex of their popularity.

I'll have to disagree (I'm hesitant to do this since you're avatar is from one of my favourite bands of all time). I think Nirvana was a symbol of the time they came out, and while they were not a great band, they came out at the perfect time and captured the youth at that time because of what they did and said. The youth of the time needed something to latch onto and grunge (Nirvana being the figureheads for grunge) was it happened to be.

Very similar thing can be said for the Sex Pistols, really quite a terrible band (I actually love some the songs they did, but I noticed someone labelled them as overrated in this thread), and in many ways a fabrication by Malcolm McLaren, but they represented something and that something captured the youth and made them an iconic movement in music history. Heck, you coudl say the same thing for The Beatles before them, and Elvis before them.

Generally happens every generation or so.

probably the dumbest thing i've read today

how old are you, 16? you know nothing of grunge.

No not 16 just because I don't think Nirvana lives up to hype doesn't mean I know nothing of Grunge try to not assume things.

The Beatles
Michael Jackson
U2
Lady Gaga

To most other bands people have suggested such as Coldplay...the band has to by hyped up to be overrated. Coldplay hasn't been heard from in a good long while

Rush? Van Halen? Yes? Aerosmith? Too much talent/genius in all of those bands to be called overrated, give me a break with some of these.

Tool, Metalica, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Nirvana.. now THESE are overrated bands. Scientifically proven.

And U2? Please.. it's amazing how much personal, misguided hatred of a band's lead singer turns people into biased morons. I'm tired of their music personally but even I understand how great some of their work is, enough already.

Oh yeah can't forget KISS and Radiohead.

Seems a lot of these choices are dictated by the age of the listener, or at least the era of music they listen to. :hmm:

The musical ignorance in this thread makes me sad.

To say the Beatles are overrated is beyond stupid. They single-handedly pioneered multi-track recording which has had more of on impact on the music industry then anything else ever.

You are correct, but incorrect.

When I said the Beatles were overrated, I was referring to their music as in relation to how enjoyable it is to listen to.

However, they were one of the most innovative and influential musicians of all time and they left their influence on most all modern western rock music. I give them that, but I listen to their music and while it's consistently enjoyable to listen to, their lyrics and melodies are nice but not incredible in any way.

There were more historically significant than anything else.

Tie between The Who and Rush.

You know, I never know which way to go with you Olds. On the one hand, I 100% agree with you about Rush.

On the other hand, The Who is one of the greatest bands ever, and without The Who, we wouldn't have *puts on sunglasses* CSI: Horatio.

The White Stripes are much worse... and I don't even think Nirvana is good.

I'd like to see where these bands are rated before I decide if they're over rated. What if they're rated by record sales? How about most top 40 hits? Someone PLEASE give me direction on how to decide.

Here ya go:

Step one: Have you ever heard of the band?
Yes - might be overrated, proceed to step two
No - stop, not overrated

Step two: Have you ever heard a member of the band say something like "I'm Doug from DeathSock and you're listening to KWSD rocking the Beerbong Valley"?
Yes - they are overrated, stop
No - proceed to step three

Step three: Have you ever heard an exchange between two middle school boys discussing the merits of the band?
Yes - they are overrated, stop
No - proceed to step four

Step four: Are they represented in IronWing's music collection?
Yes - they are not overrated, stop
No - they are overrated, stop
