Who determines if a band is overrated? What if the opinion of the person that says they are overrated is overrated?

Overrated was a term invented by doofuses that want more people to hate the same things they do.

The Beatles are overrated.
And I dont believe too many arguments about them being "influential". Paris Hilton has influenced millions of young girls all over the place.
Jesse Jackson has influenced millions of black men in America.

They are both people who qualify as "influential" even though I dont care for what they've done. Dunno if influential should be an automatic WIN when describing someone. Especially if the argument is Overrated vs Underrated, which is what we have here.

I guess for me Overrated means they get all the credit for being world changing or super influential. Take Nirvana for example they're good but they wouldn't have been anything if not for the Meat Puppets or the Melvins.

Nirvana/Foo Fighters/Lada GaGa would be my picks

I get Nirvana spawning the whole grunge craze thing, I just don't think he was that good. Foo Fighters turned into a top 20 machine.

Most bands of the late 60s and 70s such as the Beatles and Pink Floyd. While they were great musicians, they are put on a pedestal by the demographic dominance of the baby boomer generation.

Again, don't flame, they were great awesome musicians, but people act like their music was beyond comparison to anything ever produced in the history of the world.
Pink Floyd was before I was born and I consider them one of the greatest bands in history. Beatles aren't really my thing though.

I'd have to go with Nirvana. There are worse bands, and more popular bands, but none have as much of a sum total of suck + following.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles%27_recording_technology

A staggering number of recording technologies were derived from what the Beatles and their crew came up with. I just cannot fathom how that kind of thing can be considered overrated when it's used by practically everyone still today.

I think there is a nomenclature disconnect for some people here.

i do not understand how you can call the Beatles overrated. They simply transformed music in their time. Yes, they were, in essence, a pop band, but they brought non mainstream stuff to the main stream. That "weird stuff", well, that was then transforming themselves into something beyond a teeny popper band.

the man popularized an entire sub-genre all by himself.

That whole sub-genre is overrated. :awe:

I like Reznor, I just don't especially like his music.

All of these bands, all of them, have more talent in their little finger than all of us do combined. They'll always be better than us and I guarantee that if you were in a position to request an improv jam that all of these bands would knock your socks off.

Such a subjective question anyway.

Them doing an improv jam is considerably different from the music they pick to market as their sound. I don't even know why you're making a point about musical talent in comparison to a bunch of people discussing their liking of that music. Obviously they have talent, but that doesn't mean we can't say we don't like how they use it.

Since when has asking people's opinions been subjective? :awe:

Coldplay... Honestly, I hate to say this (big Joshua Tree era fan), but modern U2 sucks, and they're treated like rock gods... Look at Pearl Jam - they're not given much respect but still continue to make decent to good albums (while releasing classics in the 80s/90s).

Pearl Jam gets a lot of respect, but they seem to be a band no one actually wants to listen to. I'd disagree about continuing to make decent/good albums. They had one very good one and then maybe another decent one. I like that they have tried to change things up (and I have to give them props for actually doing some binaural recording), but the result has not been something that I care for.

Michael Jackson has to be the most overrated 'musician' of all time... Perhaps its that I didn't grow up in the 80s but damn, he was not entertaining at all and his voice is down right annoying.

Also, Nickleback sucks balls.

This thread is going to be fun.

I'll help:

Metallica
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
U2
The Who
Michael Jackson
Elton John
Foo Fighters
Beatles
Pearl Jam
Rolling Stones
Neil Young

...not a lick of musical talent in any of their bones.

Is my sarcasm meter broken?
If not,
motion to nominate edro as the biggest idiot on ATOT.

Overated?
Maybe a couple of those on the list.
No musical talent?
Absolutely preposterous.

Not even overrated. Those are some of the best rock bands/talents ever on that list. Neil Young? Come on. He's an icon of rock music, the father of grunge.

while they are not a jam band they do jam out live. They have great live shows and are definitely gifted musicians. Best band ever? No. Over rated? I don't really see them grabbing headlines for being the best band ever so .....no.

I'm sorry you don't like their music.

The Beatles are the Abraham of rock music. Whatever you hear today can be traced back to them. Look at the variety of styles on the White Album, each track is planting a seed.
