What is with all the love for Nicolas Cage? Every time I see Cage in a movie, I think of his awful role in Con-Air.

I'm tempted to put Bruce Willis in the overrated category. His movies are almost always entertaining, but I'm never impressed with his acting.

the only one i beg to differ with is Johnny Depp

and probably Tom Cruise. his real life personality aside, he was awesome in Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July. more recently, Collateral wasn't that bad either.

What does overrated mean, anyway? Overrated because they're popular? Why not just choose all of the top actors and say they're all overrated? That's pretty much what you've done.

And having Edward Norton mentioned as overrated makes this thread ridiculous.

Ed Norton has gotten some big parts and i don't see his allure either.

DiCaprio's voice makes it hard for him to take older roles but I'd say he's got a better chance of being underrated than over...Critically underrated, that's for sure. Not sure if the little girls still like him enough for him to be overrated fan-wise.

Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors but he's gotten a lot of hype recently...still, I challenge you to name anyone who could have played Cap'n Jack Sparrow or Ed Scissorhands better than he...Maybe he deserves that hype...

Of the women, your list is missing Kirsten freakin' Dunst

Ah, and ScarJo. I hesitate because, although she has only one demeanor, that demeanor was perfect for Lost in Translation

(I understand that the last one will get some disagreements...try not to confuse her talent with her sweet rack)

Pretty much all of them. Every actor he listed has at least one or two great performances. That he lists them as overrated demonstrates that he has probably not seen 3/4 of the movies that have the actors he listed in them.

I am not a big fan of johnny depp when he plays gay keith richards in campy B drek, but it's hard to deny the talent of the guy. I think the OP might have something against what's eating gilbert grape, now that I look at the list.

What am I talking about? The OP probably wasn't even born when that movie came out.

Yes, the OP definitely needs to decide whether he means overrated in respect to popularity or critical acclaim...

[Edit] As a point of reference, I would say that the movie Sidways is underrated by the general public but overrated among critics

Yes, the OP definitely needs to decide whether he means overrated in respect to popularity or critical acclaim...

Surely he means critical acclaim, because helen hunt is hardly popular...

Asking for unified public opinion on overrated themes by the public is paradoxical. These "overrated" figures attain this overrated stature due to the fact that people of the public actually regard them highly, the people who disagree call them overrated. So, inevitably, the chances of coming to a unified opinion is very slim. Now, if this thread is just talking about critical acclaim, that brings a different story.

One guy who never impressed me is Kevin Bacon. Not sure if you could put him in the "critically acclaimed" category to call him overrated but I just can't get into his work.
