Ok, bottom line. Hurricanes are more likely to be a disaster than a Jet.

Actually, I'm sure that airplanes have killed far more people in the US in the last 20 years than hurricanes have. hurricanes (or tornadoes) usually kill 5, 10, 20 people. Jets crash, and hundreds of people die.

My friends and I were having a discussion concerning offensive sports teams names and mascots. Here are some that we came up with.

Miami Hurricanes (college)
San Jose Earthquakes (mls)
Cleveland Indians (mlb) with their mascot Chief Wahoo
Akron Blast (minor league baseball). This one is really offensive. When Akron got a minor league team in their city, they held a huge public ceremony to unveil the nickname. They wanted a nickname to honor Akron native, Judith Resnik, one of the casulties of the Challenger explosion. So during this ceremoney, the big moment came when they pulled down the curtains to unveil the nickname: the Akron Blast!! At to top it all off, the mascot was a dog, who came running out to get the crowd excited. Nothing wrong there, except the mascot was named.....Kaboom! The organization finally came to their senses amid the public outcry and changed their name to the Akron Aeros. But still, this one definitely belongs in the "WTF were they thinking????" file.

Ya'll got any more?

How in the hell are you offended by the Hurricanes or the Earthquakes?

LMAO!

That Fighting Whites link is funny as hell. The very first headline made me almost fall out of my chair laughing.

"Every thang's gonna be all white."

I don?t know, I'm an American Indian from the DC area and I see nothing wrong with Redskins. They are praised here as brave warriors it is no worse than the fighting Irish.

Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!
Run or pass and score -- we want a lot more!
Beat 'em, Swamp 'em,
Touchdown! -- Let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!
Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!

I'm going to say it again - some of you are truly sad people.

I can not believe that the PCness of sport team's nicks have gone from indian tribes to, now, natural disasters. I guess my highschool should change it's name from the Tornados, right?

coincidently, Marquette has decided to change it's name from Golden Eagles to Gold. GOLD! How stupid is that. It's as bad as my beloved Syracuse changing it's name from Orangemen/women to Orange. Back on Marquette, many students wanted to change it back to Warriors (banned in the early 90s, but the school said it could be taken as a slight against Indians. Hello? Where is the one to one correlation of Warriors to an indian tribe?

Really pathetic.

I'm offended by sports because I can't play them. All teams should fold as a result. They make me sad.

Well the mascott/logo was a native american Indiane head :)
But I agree 100% with you. I live/work in Milwaukee, drive through the MU campus twice a day and go to a ton of games.

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANY students and fans still wear "bootleg" shirts/sweatshirts/hats/etc that say "MU Warriors" and they still chant Warriors at the game. The school is fighting a dying battle no question.

Worst idea EVER to go to "Gold" . THey are just making themselves look like idiots at this point. Wonder what the mascott will be now... at least with "Eagles" they had an Eagle. Somebody must have gotten killed by an Eagle recently?

Oh and of note: When they changed their name to "Golden Eagles" there was another team in the exact same conference with the EXACT same name.

As added bonus MU is now in the Big East and will be embarrassed for a long time.

Redskins is the worst. Braves (with the tomahawk chop) run a close second.

Two for humor:
The Fighting Whites (everything is going to be all white) are a parody by the UNT at Greely intramural basketball team. Google it, it's funny.

The Sam Houston Institute of Teaching. You figure it out...

'm not offended by it, but greenpeace and a few other organizations were offended by my high schools nickname. For background, the location of the highschool is in a city next to a Dept. of Energy site that was part of the manhatten project, and the material for one of the bombs dropped on Japan in WWII came from there.

The Highschool sports teams are known as the Bombers...the logo is a big R with a mushroom cloud rising out of it. Bombers

I am still pissed about this.....Gross should change it back citing Jake's stupidity as the reason for reverting back to "Orangemen/women".

Teams like Warriors and Braves should hardly be considered offensive as its only honoring those ethinicites and cultures as being proud, strong and looked up to. (and yes I have Native American relatives and friends who find these charges against "offensive team names" a joke.

Heaven forbid my ancester was a Cowboy! I find that offensive!

People need to find something more worthwhile to bitch about

Got that from Chris Rock, didn't you?
