My friends and I were having a discussion concerning offensive sports teams names and mascots. Here are some that we came up with.

Miami Hurricanes (college)
San Jose Earthquakes (mls)
Cleveland Indians (mlb) with their mascot Chief Wahoo
Akron Blast (minor league baseball). This one is really offensive. When Akron got a minor league team in their city, they held a huge public ceremony to unveil the nickname. They wanted a nickname to honor Akron native, Judith Resnik, one of the casulties of the Challenger explosion. So during this ceremoney, the big moment came when they pulled down the curtains to unveil the nickname: the Akron Blast!! At to top it all off, the mascot was a dog, who came running out to get the crowd excited. Nothing wrong there, except the mascot was named.....Kaboom! The organization finally came to their senses amid the public outcry and changed their name to the Akron Aeros. But still, this one definitely belongs in the "WTF were they thinking????" file.

Ya'll got any more?

why are the Miami Hurricanes or the San Jose Earthquakes considered offensive?
because they are weather occurences and people possibly perish in them?

Exactly. I don't find it offensive, but I can certainly see why other people would. How would you feel if one of your loved ones died in a hurricane and you turned on a TV to watch Miami football and heard thousands of people shouting, "Let's go, Hurricanes!"

Guess that'd make our Tri-City Storm Hockey team offensive too.

Reminds me, need to start taking my camera with me again. Missed a great shot of a dark rogue cloud backdropping a local business's sign with a "Go Storm!" message on it. I thought that would have been a pretty funny shot....uh, I mean offensive, terriblely offensive. I'm sorry.

I highly doubt anyone acutally finds hurricanes or eathquakes etrc offensive. Thats insane. Then anyone that was killed or attacked by a Bear Lion or shot by a 49er in an arguement over some gold maybe upset too!

THe only REAL remaining offensive name is the Redskins. That would be like having the New York N!ggers as a teamname. Teams like Warriors and Braves should hardly be considered offensive as its only honoring those ethinicites and cultures as being proud, strong and looked up to. (and yes I have Native American relatives and friends who find these charges against "offensive team names" a joke.

Heaven forbid my ancester was a Cowboy! I find that offensive!

People need to find something more worthwhile to bitch about

Ok, bottom line. Hurricanes are more likely to be a disaster than a Jet.

One of the best names was the former name of the Macon minor league hockey team. It was changed a year or two ago, but for a number of years they were:

The Macon Whoppee.

Or a member of the church? What about all the parents that had their kids molested by the Catholic church...this would be offensive to them.
