I have to do a presentation on a company for microecon, need advice/suggestions on the most interesting company. This can be from any industry for the most part...

I'm sure someone will cover Microsoft, Dell, etc., but everyone knows what they do. I'm looking for some random company that has something interesting to talk about.

Any ideas? :D

Typical car dealerships....

Actually, those slasher sale guys are controversial. Are you looking for something controversial, or something else, ie, digging for dirt, or ?

It can be controversial, basically I have to talk about what the company does, history of company, history of stock, etc.

DuPont, though maybe not for an econ class - maybe sociology of the family or sociology of American business. The DuPont family's connections in America from the early 1800s through now are incredible, and fascinating, in my opinion.

you can also try Charles Schwab, Exxon Mobil or BP Amoco, Apple or Sun or check your local newspaper to see what company is hot. There are others.

IP-Extreme - I don't understand their business model well enough yet to explain it but what I do know of it the concept is interesting.
Impinj - Self adapting silicon allowing for long range RFID write capability.
Trenstar - The interesting thing about these guys is they bought all the kegs from Coors. That is, they paid Coors to use their technologies and made all their money from managing the Kegs more efficiently.

A real good company to do some research on would be Rockwell Collins. They have their hands in alot of different things relating to avionics both commercial and military. They do alot of communications equipment in that realm, so they could be of some interest. Plus they're doing really well at the moment (there's also the history of their competition with Honeywell).

Lockhead Martin is another company that has plenty of history behind it (U2, SR-71 Blackbird, just to name 2), and same with Rolls Royce.

Here is a good one actually.

Look up the history of ESPN. Look for a guy named "Stu Evey". He's a personal friend of mine and lives in Spokane, Wa, where I grew up.

His latest book is:

Founder of ESPN Really, he's a great guy. :D

He was a former exec with the J.Paul Getty oil Co.

Whole Foods is interesting as it is a really fast growing company.

If you are looking for easy access to all the information you need, a Financial Services company like Wells Fargo may be a better bet as they have to really go all out as far as disclosures.
