I'm looking to setup samba in slackware 7.1
What is the best site to find a how-o on this topic?

btw.. slackware 7.1 does come with samba, right?

most people will tell you to go to www.samba.org to find out information about that... I believe slackware comes with it. did you have any questions in particular?

Well like most newbies to linux ask.. how hard is it to setup? I'm very familiar with windows and some command line operations. Anyways, before I get started with samba. Do I have to add the user name and password of the linux box to the "users and groups" in win2k? Thanks

well i did a lot of hair pulling but I'd be happy telling you the steps.

In a nutshell, it goes like this..

install the RPMs that come with Slackware. (This'll dump the files in the appropriate spots on your system)

Then, locate the smb.conf file (typically, in the /etc or /etc/samba directory) This file provides the directives for Samba server to follow.

Then create a samba user (the windows machine username that will log into the linux machine)

Edit the smb.conf file. Give a machine name, indicate with folders you want to share.

Start samba!

So, first install Samba.. then post.

Ok.. but first i need to get slackware installed! I made an iso of the cd, set bios to boot cd first, and then when i turn on the pc i get the "invalid system disk" error! any ideas? or is there a file on the cd that i can run to setup slackware?

that's odd... did you burn from image when you burned from the iso? If not, you probably have the ISO file on the cd which won't work.

If that's the case, what burning software are you using?

no, i got them from a private ftp

but is there an executable file on the cd? cuz i can access the cd after booting off the win me cd

Well, if you downloaded an ISO, you have to burn it as in image onto a blank CD. Unless, you got a BIN file. -S

i did burn it as an image.. all the files are on the cd. ive given up on the cd, do u know where i can get a boot disk for slackware?

No clue... i'm a Mandrake/Red Hat junkie. Any way you could get your hands on one of those distributions through linuxiso.org? You shouldn't have any problems with those

all the disks images you could need are provided on the slackware CD. You'll need a boot disk, and a root disk. The boot disk contains the kernel, for most people bare.i should work. The root disk contains a default root filesystem, don't know the names of those. As for not being able to boot off the CD, my best guess would be a corrupted iso image :-\ Which might give you problems during install, the best I can recommend is to checksum it, or even better just download 8.0 from an official mirror :0)

Oh and don't listen to that Chatterjee, Slackware does not use any evil RPM's ;-)

so slackware doesn't use RPMs. big deal. Maybe bremen can tell you an easier way. but AFTER you get the RPMs installed. That's where you'll need help anyway.

Bremen - what if i copied the files off the cd to a hard drive? would that work to install it?

Yes, you can install off a local HDD, although you will still need a boot disk, and a root disk. I have not done an install off a local HDD yet (I am going to as soon as I install Slackware 8.0), however I would recommend you boot off a CD to begin with, it is just plain easier. Since you got the iso from a private site it may be it is not an official iso image, but rather just someone who burned the installation files onto it. Download an iso from an official mirror, and make sure you run a checksum against it to ensure it isn't corrupted (another possibility as to what happened to your current CD, in which case installing even from a boot disk I would strongly advice against).

As for SAMBA itself, it is included with Slackware. Others have given better help than I could on how to configure it :0)
