Most Influential Science Fiction Movie Ever?

I think it is Blade Runner. I notice the influence of Blade Runner on every futuristic science fiction movie out there.Almost all of the anime movies use the Blade Runner version of the future. We recently saw the ripoff( artistically atleast) A.I. Now before any of you mention the movie Metropolis as the most influential science fiction movie. I think it is because of Blade Runner that there was a burst of science fiction movies then and even now which have the Blade Runner vision of the the future. The complexity and beauty of Ridleys' Blade Runner certainly influenced a lot of the movie people. I hope this thread has your movie choice and a short description and not long discussions by "Blade Runner Nerds" so as to keep the discussion fair to everyone .😀

"2001: A Space Odyssey"

i think that movie was good but i dont think it was influential to the science fiction genre...i may be wrong here...

You may be right about that... 2001 was one of the few movies that attempted to present the future realistically - as Riddey Scott's Alien follows the idea of "realism" as does BR - Blade Runner wouldn't have happened without 2001....

Most influential is a tough one... i'll take the easy way out, and give instead the most overlooked sci-fi type film ever... "Brazil."

Didn't Terry Gilliam make that? I have been meaning to see it for a while. Guess I'll have to check it out. Most influential would be Voyage de la Lune. It was that old silent movie where they were shot to the moon in a cannon. Meilles I think. Good stuff. Also Metropolis.

Brazil was the worst movie I've ever seen, but maybe that was because I was about 10 when I saw it. I'm only 18 now, so my experience doesn't go back that far, but the sci-fi movie that I judge all others by is Alien. Blade runner was pretty dern good too.

Space Balls

Edit: Seriously, while I certainly agree with "Blade Runner" and "Star Wars" I have to also include the likes of "E.T." "Close Encounters of A Third Kind" "Strange Days" and "The Matrix."

I think the humor in Brazil is lost on a 10-year-old. You should have been watching Time Bandits and Baron Von Munchausen.
I definitely agree with 2001 and Bladerunner.
I definitely don't agree with "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and I'm interested in hearing why people chose that. I've seen it 3-4 times and while I like it a lot, it seems like a very typical flying saucer and giant robot movie. It seems neither technically or conceptually groundbreaking in either way.

You have to remember the time that the movie was made - in the '50s - back then it was "bug-eyed aliens" in fake looking suits that were out to destroy the world and attack our women😉... With "Day" it was a attempt to show what if there were Aliens and they didn't want to attack the earth - but they just didn't want us to spread war unto the galaxy...

Ahhh....I guess I don't count the storyline--were that the case, I'd have to choose something by Jules Verne or HG Wells as the winner.

<< 2001: A Space Odyssey >>

easily, beats these other pretneders. hell we hadn't even been to the moon yet when this came out. special effects where great.

Wtf are you people smoking? Only 1 mention of Star Wars? My argument is this: No movie has infiltrated American culture the way that Star Wars has. It is practically embedded into us from birth. Bladerunner more influential? 2001? Sure they're all good on their own merits, and influenced other Sci-Fi movies. But nothing, NOTHING is as "influential" as Star Wars.

Even tho George Lucas is an idiot. 🙂
