Scrolls isn't exactly a hit yet. And there's been no peeps on his spaceship game, either.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies released a whole album, don't forget that.

I'm confused, what about Cherry Poppin Daddies? They freakin rock, its one of the handful of CDs i actually liked when i bought it. :D

That isn't even a "most important" list. The list specifically states that it's who they think will shape the next generation. In other words, these people have influence by their games, viewpoints, stances, etc.

Yes, Carmack is the father to modern fps, but has he done anything relevant the last 5 years?

This obviously makes everything he worked on in the past that set the groundwork for games you probably enjoy today irrelevant. I'll give him a call and tell him to make another Doom so internet user biostud is happy for another few years.

Sometimes you give credit to those who have laid the groundwork, and sometimes you give credit to those who are at the top right now... Give me a title where Carmarck is directly involved so I can go and buy the game.

I think the site is running for more of a shock factor; it's a shame the list is strung out and seems to be made by a high schooler bent on site hits. I kinda just don't even want to see their other content, because as a few mentioned above some important names aren't even on that list. It's like they googled "game dev" and started writing names down.

ID tech 5 engine has some really neat things it can do. It's unfortunate more devs are not using the engine, but that doesn't mean it's not a good engine. If that was a measurement then Ubi would stop milking that rag Anvil engine.

Occulus Rift. Granted, not a game, but it's made breakthroughs in how games are played and developed.

Simply put we are heading into new times.

Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, Duke Nukem 3D were all great games when i was growing up, but the newer generations haven't even heard of them. Maybe a few of the later releases like Doom 3, but they have absolutely no connection between the sequels and the importance of the originals.

It's all Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Need for speed armageddon (or what ever). If you ask if they have played the Need for Speed (The original) they will ask if they can get it on Xbox or PS2.

And without Carmack, Call of Duty wouldn't exist, and neither would the majority of games coming out now. This is the point.

It depends on what your list is going for, though. If it's about "currently influential" whatever, then ok, Carmack hasn't done anything in the past couple years.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean you say, "well, computers at all wouldn't exist without Alan Turing" or "computers couldn't be invented without books, so what about Johannes Gutenburg" or whatever. I mean, I guess you could do that, but that would be stupid. That's why you have to strictly define the terms of the list. The problem is then when the publication puts some link-baity title on it ("BEST EVER GAMES OF ALL TIME EVER") that doesn't actually reflect what the list is about.

Can anyone link me (and others possibly) to the reddit thread with the list? I'd like to know if they included Shigeru Miyamoto and if so which position they gave him, just curious.

Lists are something you read in order to get angry or depressed. Or both. There's no other reason to read them.

This is kinda like the ten best PC games of all time list that do not include Doom.

The list are a reflection of the experience of the people who put them together.
