I'd go with everyone else and say it depends. I mean, spanner just said that AE has almost no hands on experience at VT. Where I'm at, Notre Dame, all AE majors build their own plane during their senior year. That's pretty hands on.

One of my Professor's just got his Ph.D from Notre Dame in AE (went their for MS and BS, too) 3 years ago. Best damn teacher I have ever had. The AE's at my school are in with the ME's, so our first 3 years are almost exactly the same so they do a lot of the hands-on stuff we do, and they have two major design projects (that I know) in their senior year. Both of them involve building an Airplane.
