Most fast and stable P4 setup...

My friend is asking me to build a P4 based system, and wants it to be as fast and stable as possible. So which combination should I use?

SiS645 with DDR
Intel 845 with DDR
Intel 850 with Rambus

Also, which ever chipset you recommend, which motherboard would you choose?

A i850 motherboard from Intel, Asus, Msi or Epox and a couple of Samsung RIMM's would make a very fast and very stable system.

Chipset: Intel i845 or i850. SiS645 isn't bad by any means, but if I had the choice, an Intel chipset would be the way to go.
Motherboard: Any board from ASUS or Tyan will very likely be rock solid, especially with an Intel chipset.

Good luck. 🙂

go for the 850, RDRAM and DDR have virtually no price difference and you get better speed than the DDR, and more memory bandwidth, if you OC DDR (which reduces reliability) or RDRAM for that matter you can catch up DDR to RDRAM in terms of memory bandwidth and speed. Oh and for all those who don't think memory bandwidth makes a difference then either you only single task or you just aren't multitasking enough 🙂, but if your friend does an insane ammount of multitasking then just go dual processor, if you can afford it...

First choice would be an 850 based board. That would be your fastest setup and is rock solid. The 845D would be next and the SIS 645 a close third, seeing as I'm not sure how stable that setup would be but it's probably faster than the 845D.

Stay away from VIA chipsets if your looking for stability.

One more thing, he wants to keep this system for a while. Does that change anything if he wants to have the choice of future upgrades in faster CPU or memory?

just buy a a 3rd party board with an intel chipset with the 850 so your board will support northwoods, and hopefully PC1066, if not, just OC it 🙂

I've owned both the i850 and the i845

Not only is the i845 more stable, but it clocks 100mhz higher

Are you going to overclock the P4 for him? If not then an Asus P4T-E is definitely the way to go. If you are going to overclock I'd get the Abit TH7II. Both are i850 based boards and would make for a GREAT P4 system. 😉 If you can, get the new Northwood P4s if your friend can afford it.

Definatly grab a northwood if he can afford it. I've got a 2ghz northwood and an Asus P4B266 running right now at 2.4ghz completely stable and lightning fast.

I'm not too worried about the processor. He is going to decide that later when he decides how much money he wants to spend. How much is PC1066 going to be anyways? Since RAMBUS has been so expensive for so long, I think he is leaning towards DDR, because PC2700 isn't too bad, and the MSI 645 Ultra333 seems very good. Any suggestions if he chooses DDR?

Probably not going to overclock it. I probably will try to convince him to go with the Intel 850 with Rambus.

<< Dark4ng3l: P4= not fast.... >>

Wrong topic... go away!

I just got a P4B266 with a P4 2.0A. I'll let you all know how it all works once I've installed all the software this weekend.

I beg to differ on the OS, though. Win2K is still more stable than WinXP, IMO. I'm waiting for at least SP1 until I jump on that boat.

<< P4= not fast.... >>

LOL!! Tell you what Dark4ng3l

when you are 2000mhz faster than you are now, you can make that statement 🙂

Get the Asus P4B266 if he's leaning towards DDRAM.
