Most efficient firewall? low cpu/mem usage

Why would you use a different firewall on Vista? The included firewall is very powerful.

The Vista Firewall is very Good, but is very hard to configure the Extra Power.

I would recommend a 3rd [arty alternative when a user find the native Vista's Extended Firewall too hard to handle.

Are there any application layer\deep packet consumer firewalls?
The more I think about it, the more it would be nice if I had a FW that did more than block ports.

ISA Server 2004 🙂

running torrents and ultravnc on an old laptop, p3 650, vsmon.exe aka zonealarm seems to eat about 18% of the cpu alone.
is there a better option?

what version do you have on ZA?

Heh was hoping for something with a "consumer" cost 😉

I know I know, hoping for the world.

Kerio 215 will give you random BSOD's involving fwdrv.sys
I know from personal experience when I was using Win2k which has no built in firewall.

Here are 2 that I came across in the days when I was hunting for a small footprint firewall:
http://www.ghostsecurity.com/ghostwall/
http://www.software4u.tk/

Ghostwall bills itself as a Windows Firewall replacement.
People claim ghostwall is unnecessary if you have a hardware firewall, claiming it basically does the same thing, but I'm no guru so can't comment. But when it was running I was unable to get Activesync to connect with my PDA and didn't know how to fix that. Ghostwall didn't show me any messages that it was blocking a connection (I managed to figure it out myself) and didn't want to subject myself to any other problems down the road so I just uninstalled this firewall after a while.

The AS3 website is a little shady, but it's on reputable website like softpedia and nonags.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/S...ersonal-Firewall.shtml
This program went from freeware to payware and back to freeware. Never tried it but it caught my attention due to claims of low resource usage and it's a small download. it has good user ratings from softpedia

same here but never have any problem so I can't say about resource hog maybe just because i have big memory and superfast cpu?

ok tested kerio for a while. impressive, less than 1% cpu on task manager compared to the 15-20%of zonealarm.

and rottie... i don't notice any performance hit on my desktop either with zonealarm, but thats a pentium d and 2gb ram, so its much less of a burden than on the pIII. 18% on a p3 is like ziltch on any modern cpu... but still...

I gues it is a matter of wording.

If I was in this situation I would Post.

I my system Kerio 215 gave random BSOD's involving fwdrv.sys.

Since I run Kerio on few different computers running Win2000, WinXP, and I never had a BSOD I have to assume that it is the poster system rather than Kerio215 in general.

But it wasn't just my system, google: kerio fwdrv.sys
and probably the first results you'll see involve BSOD's and version 215
