Paradise Lost

It's disturbing to think some idiot would waste so much time on a book so overrated and useless.

all the books mentioned here are read by high school freshman, and arent disturbing at all, rather educational.

I don't remeber the name of the book, but it was aboutthese people that were trying this drug that would let them die then come back to lie so they could see heaven when it turned out they were really seeing hell. It was messep up.

If you seriouly are saying that there is some sick private school out there feeding Paradise Lost to high school kids, then I will personally go down there and yank the school president's underware over his head until his ball turns purple.

I haven't read a lot of "disturbing" books. IT by Stephen King was pretty disturbing though.

Lots of good replies so far. A lot of the existential works are disturbing, considering they're outlook on life. The Flies by Sartre and The Stranger by Camus are pretty good.

I agree with yellowperil, though, those post-apocolyptic novels are scary...considering the potential reality behind them.

Anyone read any of the Left Behind series - it sort of goes along with the previously mention Bible.

upton sinclair wrote 'the jungle'. the muckrakers influenced the progressive movement
of the early 1900s that exposed corporate abuses and brought much needed reform to
major combines, like life insurance companies, beef, and other industries. his crusades
influenced later american socialist and communist movements.

I had forgotten about johhny got his gun...that book was so sad....the jungle was disturbing.... Lord of the Flies, I read in 8th grade. I loved the book, but damn it was a little eye-opening at that age. Worst book though was Helter Skelter. It's non-fiction about Charlie Manson, the family and the Tate-La Bianca murders.

late.

The first time I read it, I was pretty disturbed by Camus' book The Stranger.

The book is incredibly effective considering how short it is. While reading it I felt a cold chilling indifference trying to creep into me.

Excellent book though. And I love that Robert Smith of the Cure was inspired to write the song Killing an Arab based on the work.
