Where's Mike Tyson?

Thats what I was thinking. Back when Gus D'Amato mentored him he was a decent kid (as far as boxers go) and I thought indestructable at the time. Anyway he got in with the black panther/black muslim/black power crowd and association with Don King started going of the deep end into crimminality and deranged thinking. His record stared to suffer as well starting with Douglas.

He did not rape that girl though.

Carl Lewis!

Remember him, remember Ben Johnson, remember how Ben Johnson lost, due to steroid use, the Gold in the Seoul Olympics and Carl Lewis was promoted from Silver to Gold? Turns out Carl Lewis was using steroids too. Though he tested Negative at the competition, he had tested Positive numerous times and afterwards, the US athletic association which performed the tests hid the results.

i dont think game-related injured players should count ... i mean they did it while doing their job.

so many sad stories about these guys that had potential. if i had some extraordinary talent id try to be a bit more careful

Definatly Grant Hill, he came out strong his rookie year, but he kept f*cking up his ankle, over and over.

How can you blame him for that? He tried to fix it but it keeps getting messed up in fact I think he should quit trying to come back and let it go like Bo Jackson did.

I put Grant Hill, because his injuries and stupid, unprepared comebacks have screwed his whole team for what? three seasons now? They have so much money tied-up in a guy who can't play, it's ridiculous.

I was wondering about Miner... he disappeared before he really accomplished anything (except didn't he win the Slam Dunk Contest?)

Brien Taylor gets the "Stupidest Athlete" award, right up there with a recent honorable mention to Jay Williams. For those who don't know, Taylor was a fireballing pitching prospect the Yankees drafted. He got a huge contract at something like age 17, and was supposed to be the Next Big Thing in pitching. Not long after, he got into a bar fight and ruined his shoulder. Moron. Jay Williams, for those under a rock, was the 2nd overall NBA pick last year who just destroyed his leg in a motorcycle accident.

Griffey? Meh, he never was good enough to carry a team, so he never won. Now age is catching-up to him, big deal.

The Big Hurt won the MVP a couple times, sure, but he's been on a team which is cursed, so what can you say if he sucks?

Mo Vaughn doesn't count, because everyone on the Mets has been a disappointment.

As for the hockey guy, whatever. 😛

As a Knicks fan, though, LJ is the biggest disappointment of course.

Great idea for a thread, btw. 😀

Big HURT Doesn't suck.

Thomas has had a GOOD career, not great, but GOOD. Rob Neyer argues that Frank Thomas is better than Edgar Martinez. as well as arguing that Thomas should be a HOFer and Martinez shouldn't.

I'd say Christian Laetner. He was the only college kid on the Dream Team in 1992, and he did nothing useful in the NBA.

he's has a decent career. he even made the all star team once (the same year as tom gugs).

I can't believe people would vote for grant hill :|, muchless ken griffey.

Hill tried to play injured in the playoffs and it backfired bigtime. He was awesome before that. Griffey has around 400 homers, thats a disappointment?
Injuries are a part of athletics...don't flame these guys because they've had injury problems. If jwill never plays again, that will suck, but not a disappointment as a professional athlete, even tho he struggled in his rookie season.

That would be absurd to group injured players in with a list of no talent players and underachievers like the pervis ellison's, larry johnson's, christian laetner's and harold minors and even frank thomas, who I like but fizzled quickly. Those who don't work on their game the way they should and/or never had the talent they were purported to have is a far different issue than the grant hills of the world. Hill's ankle doesn't disqualify or invalidate his talent or career imo.

Bo Jackson then would be considered a disappointment? He could have doubled his numbers would be in the hall of fame (nfl) if he didn't get injured, but while the injury was tragic, its hardly a "disappointment".

And I voted for ryan leaf. There's a perfect example of an overrated underachiever if I ever heard one. He didn't have as much talent as people thought and he let his personal problems destroy what talent he did have. These guys deserve to get dissed.
