farcry HDR is beta...if you don't like it then don't play with it on. FYI, HL2 is being updated with a patch that enables HDR so if you don't like it, guess you are out of luck
HDR looks awesome IMO, adds new vivid(ness?) to the colors and light.

I'm going to hope that Valve isn't as heavyhanded with their use of HDR as Crytek. There are some cool elements to it, but at the default intesnity in FarCry it's just too much.

From a sheer beauty standpoint, I think World of Warcraft is the most 'beautiful' game out right now. Other games look more realistic, but everytime I load up WoW, I manage to find some new vista in some new land that looks like a painted scene.

wow's artistic style is diffenately original, and good looking. thats what i like about blizzard, they think out of the box. for example, they supply mac/pc hybrid disks.

Of course that is not out yet. Farcry is dead last of the big 3 imo. The models look like they are laminated they are so shiny, and the water is just a repeating pixel shader. Yea at first farcry water was WOA, but play half life 2 in the canal map, and then tell me how crappy farcry's water is. Doom3 has some really good looking things, but plenty of low res textures and a lack of bumpmapping on the models.

I would say, Half Life 2 is the best game(both graphically and from a gameplay standpoint) out there to this date. Age of Empires 3 looks to take hold of the best graphics of any game untill the Unreal Engine 3 is used.
 
I definately think of the games out

DIII wins (not good gameplay though); then Far Cry, then HL2.

They all look incredible in their own respect but the DIII engine is so complex. I think once we see a game that isn't shrouded in darkness the DIII engine will show what i can really do.

All of these games have great gfx although not consistently thru the game. 😉

Edit: As far as being wowed by any game, HL2 definitely has my vote. It is the only game I've ever played that felt almost photo-realistic. Doom3 had much better shadows and lighting effects, but a lot of the textures were pretty low detail when you got up close - things that looked great at a distance looked like I was playing @ 800x600 when I got close to them. Plus, Doom3 had a really fake, sterile feel to it. HL2 did a good job of making you feel like you were in a rundown city - great graphics with a gritty edge. HDR in FarCry plain sucks IMO... Too bright on the indoor levels and completely unrealistic looking. Another thing that no one seems to mention about HDR is that it is constantly adjusting the brightness... Something will be really bright at a distance and as you get closer it dims as if your pupils were adjusting to the light. I feel like my eyes are dialated the whole time I play with HDR enabled. The effects could be cool, but they are way overdone.

you are compaing an engine that isnt even NEAR complete to hl2.
i never said hl2 looked bad...quite the contrary, it looks amazing. i just hate the lo-res textures everywhere. i took a whole bunch of screenies if you guys really want to know what i mean. but if you sort of stand back and play the game and not be nitpicky, its really awesome.

doom 3's textures and fire are better IMO then hl2 (fire looks pretty bad, you have to admit). i havent seen how the D3 engine handles water, that should be intresting though.

the slam dunk for farcry (well, there are two actually) is the vegetation rendering and the water. thats as good as it gets, i think the water looks better then HL2 just because it's more intresting;it moves more and ive never seen trees/bushes etc better then Farcry.

while you guys might think that doom3 cant compare, its alot different. "i cant see the graphics because its so damn dark" that is the point of the damn game! the game engine puts you in the PERFECT atmosphere. if you have ever played through Doom III with headphones and the graphics on high, i think you will know what i mean. you WILL jump out of your seat, and have sweaty palms.

it can diffenately mean realistic, but i think that games like XIII have great graphics..its a different type of visual style. hl2 is sort of gritty realism, while elder scrolls is fantasy. they both look insanely good.

I can't wait for Age of Empires 3. The graphics look awsome and Age of Empires II was one of my favorite games.
 
Age of Empires III is shaping up to look amazing
Rome: Total War can be visually stunning at times (even on the campaign map)
Zelda: Wind Waker had graphics that were unique and quite amazing in their own right
Ico for the PS2 (never played, but demos looked grand
certain parts of Doom III
Much of Far Cry
Certain parts of SSX 3 on the gamecube look stunning
Max Payne 2
Even many 2D games can look quite good (examples being Viewtiful Joe, many older RPGs, etc.)

Really, the list is quite extensive. If you're simply aiming at photorealism, it becomes a very short list. But I'm not always for a photorealistic game. Style plays very heavy in the graphics department also. Style combined with great gameplay equals a killer title.
 
The Chronicles of Riddick looks amazing... I thought that game was gorgeous

but yeah, next up is FC... gotta love that game!

i wonder how that will run on current gen hardware though, 6800ultra x800 and the like. i would think i could do 40FPS 12x10 no aa or af.
 
Oh yes, AOE3 is amazing, I LOVED (LOVED) aoe2 (I won 200 in a tournament once). I really like RTS games (except for command and conquer:Generals, they ruined that series) but I hate how so little of them hav good graphics.

Mechassault 2: Lone wolf is nice. Theres some nice character detail, plus the mechs look real.

HL2 is my fav, I love realistic graphics,

Fable looked nice, it really made it feel like a fantasy or dream.

D3 has nice lighting (obviously) but the textures are sub-par. And the characters look like they all have a mild case of downs syndrome.

I've only seen pics of Far-Cry, but for some reason it just doesnt do it for me. It's hard to explain.

Elder scrolls 3 looks sweet. ES2 had great enviorments, but the models=poo
