The duke was hard core when it was still fashionable to act like a man. Some of the modern day guys get props cause it's no longer cool to be macho or manlike. John Wayne get's my vote.

What? No Jack Palance or Lee Van Cleef in the poll? Both have had some memorable bad guy roles. My vote goes to Clint of course - the baddest of the bad.

Note: I don't like his movies! nobody is THAT good in fighting.

Steven Seagal is the biggest pansy of them all. He's totally BAD, ass. :)

No Mel Gibson? I mean come one he was bad ass in the Max Max series.

Russell Crowe? He really needs no explanation IMO if he is badd ass or not.

There is something very wrong in seeing Stallone and Seagal on the same list as De Niro.

some more that are clearly more bad ass than 1/2 of the wimps in your poll:

Lee Marvin
Ernest Borgnine
Lee Van Cleef
William Holden
Robert Ryan

I can't believe John Wayne has only gotten five votes. I would have thought it would have been neck-and-neck between he and Clint Eastwood. They are like 1a and 1b on my list of badasses.

Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in SW when he is about to blow up the Death Star.
THAT is badass, hard bastard, no holds barred, PURE EVIL acting...

hehe

edit: even Vadar did what Tarkin said because the Emperor held Tarkin in such high esteem (the scene in the Moff boardroom where Vadar does a bit of force throat pinching and Tarkin tells him to stop and Vadar obliges)

How could I have forgotten William Shatner?

His two handed chop to the neck in Star Trek is legendary.

I'd have to say nicholson, he makes an awesome bad guy... So does Tommy Lee Jones, but he's not up there...
