Yes, you are the consumer. But the mass market, which is the consumers that Apple is targeting, are not you and do not need to be bothered with having a USB mass storage drive.

Some people aren't going to like it, but its abundantly clear that the mass market is liking it.

The thing is, it's not a bother to make the device's storage easily accessible... as Android's rapid growth demonstrates very clearly. Apple didn't have to do it the way they did it to appeal to the mass market. The only reason they did it is because Apple is Apple.. and thinks it knows better than everyone else.

I don't get this. I have never used my phone as mass storage...I have owned cell phones since the 90's.

Yeah this is just one of those 'nice to have' features imho. Definitely not something I am going to pass on a device for. Granted, being able to use my EVO as mass storage helped me out a lot the other day when I couldn't find my flash drive, but I would have come up with some other way regardless.

I want to transfer music, movies, photos, apps to my phone with no more difficulty or hassle than if I were to put them on a USB flash drive.. but Apple would make me go through iTunes or download/pay for another app and/or jailbreak my device.. and I haven't heard a single good reason in this thread for why that is.

Once you realize the main problem is Apple uses a different file system than most other PC's out there, you will understand how it's not just plugging your phone into a random PC.

If you need a different set of parameters just pick a differenct phone, don't fault Apple for making it easier on a consumer.

I am pretty high tech. I don't want my phone and disk key to be complicated.

Drag and drop your music and movies and everything else you want to appear on the phone indiscriminately into that big window that reads "iTunes", then click "Sync". It took 30 seconds for her to get all that, the rest of the time was for actual copying and syncing.

So no... dragging your music into a big window and then click one button to let it do the grunt work (make folders, move files) for you is far simpler.

MY Computer is NTFS, my EVO's SD card is FAT32. Is it that complicated?

So what? Android is on an ext3 file system... which is also non-native for Windows, yet the storage is on a native file system (FAT32). Why couldn't Apple have done this?

Drag and drop is awesome, for the most basic of organization methods. Perhaps you are still a caveman when it comes to the ways iOS organizes files, and Apple doesn't want a caveman thinking it can drag and drop when Apple was already using the wheel.

That makes no sense. Windows is the most widely used personal computer OS in the world; drag/drop has been around forever, and USB storage has been around for a very long time too. Their way of doing this isn't any easier or filled with any broader appeal than Android's way.

I have a problem with forcing one way of doing things at the expense of an easy way of doing things.

There's nothing more sophisticated about how iOS organizes media/app files. You're looking at the end result and thinking of reasons to justify it.. rather than coming up with why they chose to do it that way in the first place.

Yes, we can only guess... but we can rule out some of them. Technical reason? No.. there's no reason at a hardware level for it. Software design? Not likely.. iOS could be designed to access storage in any way Apple chose. Customer demands/satisfaction? Their way isn't any more easy than Android's way. That leaves the less tangible (and more ridiculous) reasons of image and corporate ego: strong possibilities.

Not everyone wants to spend time to move all their music into a folder structure, most people want to make playlists and have their software put it into something that can be searchable by albums, artists, and any other way they want it searched.

And yes, you can get a piece of software for free where you do get file system access, it's not that hard to do.

All I'm talking about is moving media to the device's storage.. not in any particular folder structure. Android doesn't care if you put all your media in the root of the SD card; pics are accessible in the Gallery and other pic apps. music in the music apps, etc. You can make your own playlists if you want, regardless of where the music files are located on the SD card.

And yes, you can get a piece of software for free where you do get file system access, it's not that hard to do.

I didn't say it was hard or that it would cost anything.. what I've been saying is that it shouldn't be necessary in order to do what I'm talking about.

Well for one the iPhone doesn't use SD cards....try to stick to compareing native phone to native phone. Also IMHO if you are using SD anyway a separate thumb drive is a better concept for most of us that have far too much personal stuff on our phones and would rather skip carrying cable around.
