Mossberg ATR100 or Remington 770

Those who have seen my previous thread know I was trying to decide on a .22LR. Well, in my searches I decided to pass completely on the Mossberg Tactical 22LR and I still might end up with a cheap-o 22LR for plinking.

However, I have decided to go ahead and step up to a "real" rifle in .308. I'm leaning towards the Remington 770 but the Mossberg ATR100 is an option too. Thoughts/opinions?

Cheap
But that being said, the 770 is not the greatest.
I prefer the 700.

Def still get a cheap .22LR for fun, the ammo is practically free.

Agree on either the Savage 10 or 110.

Savage FP110

I was actually looking at the Savage 110BA for a while in either a .308 or .338 Lapua.

I decided i'm not willing to spend that much and If i'm going to drop that much coin on a big toy, I'd go all out on a .50 BMG probably from State Arms.

The 110FP seems up there in price too. I think the Remington 770 is a good middle ground for what i'm willing to pay.

From what I've read the 770 is "junk". If you are going to get a Remington, get the 700. Large aftermarket and they hold their value better.

If you want to save money look at Savage Stevens 200 or the Marlin XS7 in 308.

I've read worse reviews about the Savage "Stevens 200" over the Remington 770. The Marlin XS7 was also a popular recommendation, I may have to re-look that one. Not sure why I took it out of consideration to begin with.

Looks like the Savage Stevens 200 is only marginally more expensive than the Remington 770, but the 770 comes with a scope. I know it's probably cheap glass on the 770 but it is something to use while getting another.

The 770 has a tricky feed setup, some rounds won't chamber easily--not a particular caliber, just that some hit the feed lip when cycling. Miserable for follow-up shots. The scope is decent though, for the price paid. Can't say anything about the ATR 100. The Ruger American seems to be a good newcomer for bolt-action rifles, if you can find one.

Also check out gunbroker.com and budsgunshop.com, they can ship to a local FFL holder and may have lower prices on certain guns even after shipping/FFL fees.

I missed this part...

I wouldn't go with Lapua unless you're serious about hitting stuff a LONG distance away (on the order of hundreds of meters), AND you are planning on reloading your own ammo. Otherwise it's a $4 KA-CHING noise you'll hear each time you pull the trigger, minimum.

Have you priced 338 Lapua ammo?
Yep, I know the price per round. .50BMG is cheaper if you can shoot surplus.

gunbroker from what i've seen is basically useless. Take buds or any other decent online seller and tack on $100 or so, that's gunbroker pricing. i have yet to see anything even remotely decent priced on there.

I used to be a .50 shooter, it got "misplaced" (stolen by movers) when I moved back in '00 or so and I never replaced it. Long gun is fun as hell, and I don't mean 200 yards. :sneaky: I know the price per shot, but i'm looking for some middle ground since I don't want to drop that much $ into it. I figure .308 is a decent compromise really. Decent priced gun, can reach out well enough and ammo is quite reasonable.

One of the Savage 111 variants won long rifle of the year last year. Go with that. I personally have a 111 in 30-06 that I really like. It was under $500 at Cabellas.

Savage FP110

This.

I've had a 110 in .308 for better than 15 years and it is dead nuts on @ 200 meters. Using a Nikon Prostaff 3x9. Never a feed problem (Yeah, bolt action), and nice looking too. Not very picky on what it eats, either.

You've decided to purchase a hunting rifle for plinking?

Have you looked at used rifles? I picked up a used Winchester model 70 many years ago for $350 with a scope and rings.

Mossberg ATR100

I am going to guess that you are looking at economy line rifles? There is nothing wrong with buying an economy rifle.

Between the two you listed, I would go with the Mossberg atr100.

It was either American Rifleman or Guns and ammo magazine a few months ago did a review of the Mossberg atr100. If I remember right, the author of the article was shooting .75 - 1.25 inch groups at 100 yards.

I just do not like how the remington 770 handles or feels.
