Mosquitos

episodic

Lifer
Just moved to a small rural town in rice country . . .

There are TONS of mosquitos. They are everywhere. I've figured out that OFF is your friend.

Is there some economical thing I can do to make my yard unattractive? I know about bug zappers, and citronella candles, both seem to be costly.

Is there something I can spray on my house, windows, yard, etc that makes my yard unattractive?

you want a costly spray when a $50 zapper will eliminate the problem and will last for years?

Every zapper I've seen is like 299$ and propane powered. Besides - there are hundreds just on the front window - would one zapper really control the 'yard'?

huh? a bug zapper does nothing to help get rid of mosquitos. try and eliminate any standing water which is where they hatch.
we have mosquitos here too and they are bad for a couple of weeks and then gone. use a bug spray with DEET in it, and just keep covered up when you go outside at around dusk when they are worst.
nothing works great on them really.

Unfortuantly - rice country means there is millions of gallons of standing water all around me - as rice farmers depend on pumping 'standing water' into their fields.

My yard is clear. . .

get a "mosquito magnet" its a propain burner thingie that omits CO2 and kills them, 1 of them takes care of a 1 acre area, sooooooo worth the money, install give it a week or so, no more bugs

that thing is also called the mosguito magnet

Sheesh 400$ :{

Guess I'll just keep using off 😛

I was just hoping there would be a sub 20$ per month solution for the duration the season. Something I could put in a pump sprayer or some granules, something . . .

There's this stuff (I think by the same makers as OFF) that you attach to your garden hose... kinda like that liquid fertilizer or soap or whatever, and you spray your yard down with it, works for like 1-2 weeks. My dad has been using it around our yard and it *eliminates* mosquitos... it's really awesome.

Mosquito Magnet baby. $300 and they cover 1/2 acre... or you can get higher powered ones that cost more.

This is one of those life situations where sucking up the expense is worth the avoided hassel. Mozzies are the most annoying aspects of summer life. Now, with West Nile and various other diseases kicking about, it's also a major health concern.

I recommend you invest in one of those machines that keeps the bastards off your property.

Plus, Mosquito Magnets are odorless, and practically unnoticable. They get rid of black flies, sand flies and noseeums. Spend your summer nights lounging instead of swatting with MOSQUITO MAGNET.

Mosquit Magneto is a trademark of American Biophysics Corp. For my information please visit http://www.mosquitomagnet.com

😀 (no I dont work for them, I'm just being silly)

If you read the reviews on amazon on those things, they are REALLY mixed. Like 1/3 of the people say they're great, and half the people say they're awful, and the remaining 1/6 don't know what to say.

Do any of you proponents of the mosquito magnet actually have one?

I remember reading somewhere somebody got a bird feeder, and put in specific seeds or whatever to attract a certain bird(s) that would also eat mosquitoes. Maybe somebody here will recall which birds i'm talking about.

bats, and purple martins eat mosquitos although purple martins require a body of water within a specific distance from the house.
