Mortars fired at Somalia airport as U.S. Congressman left somalia

it will be interesting to see how far this goes. We already know the pirates are vowing revenge, but what are the chances of pirates attacking the U.S.? They seem like a ragtag group of dregs and misfits, for them to pull off any kind of operation which requires any kind of tactical/logistical wherewithal would surprise me...maybe they will just increase the frequency of attacks on ships

I betcha the same thing was said about Al Qaeda back in the day. That said, the pirates, if they try something, will definitely regret it.

There is a very large difference. Al Qaeda's core was forged during a religiously charged fight with the Russians in trying to liberate Afghanistan. The Somalian pirates are just trying to get loot to live like kings in their homeland. The somalian pirates are driven by greed not religious fervor, I really don't see them stepping up to the plate for holy wars and such.

Any kind of attack by Somalis against the US military may result in a few US casualties (

), but it will result in a ridiculous loss of life for the attackers.

You guys need to realize that the pirates are a mere symptom of the growing problems in Somalia -- to include thousands upon thousands of violent fanatical Islamists, including a very high number of foreign terrorists, decades-long wars between clans, and an otherwise impotent central government.

Sound familiar?

I'm surprised that Somalia has a functional airport as well. The Congressman is brave, I give him that. Going into a region that is lawless and he knows of the dangers. Most of them would prefer a grand tour of Europe.

There you go again spewing your bullshit about this being a symptom of Islamic fundamentalism.

Somalia is a poverty entrenched shithole. When you have the choice of low yield fishing that might give you $50/month or some relatively easy piracy that can rake in thousands of dollars a month, what would you do?

You already got owned in one thread about spewing this BS.

Must be a glutton for punishment?

Yep, that's me.

Care to argue my points? or, are you just doing another one of your infamous troll-by's?

Remove the words "a mere symptom" from my post above and replace them with "the tip of the iceburg"... then try to make an intelligent argument for a change.

Some people have a pathetic view of "revenge." Revenge for WHAT? Three Somalian pirates were killed when they attacked an American flagged ship, held an American captain hostage.

Nothing has changed. These jackasses showed they were already willing to kill. Now, somehow, the act of self defense justifies any sense of "revenge?" Somebody call the WAHmbulance.

And while we're at it, maybe some shippers could stock a few commercial vessels with GPS enabled torpedos and RPG's and crews trained to use them. It may cost less the than the multi-million dollar ransoms they've been paying.
