No Lifer
now I know this turned out to be not true, but back in the day when MK was hot at the arcades, I remember reading this EGM that showed the character Ermac. it was a little side article on the side of the page in an EGM, i don't remember the exact issue. However, I do remember that it turned out to be a phony.

I remember the way to face him had something to do with the way you killed the charracter and where they ended up lying down on the ground. I think it was on the either 2nd or 3rd background in MK1, and they had to be lined up with something in the background but I do not remember.

does anyone know exactly the origins of the character Ermac and this story? I just find it funny how Ermac has been a character in the actual series after he was created as a rumor by someone claiming to have found him in MK1 but it was just a hoax. For those who don't know, he was a red colored scorpion/sub zero character, and his name stood for something along the lines of "Earning Machines..." something something.

so anyone know the whole story behind him?

EDIT: Here is a little info..

While that is not the actual image that first appeared in EGM, that gives the info that was given in EGM on how to face the guy. I am still looking for the actual image i saw in EGM 🙂

Sub-Zero - Blue Ninja
Scorpion - Yellow Ninja
Reptile - Green Ninja
Ermac - Red Ninja
Rain - Purple (?)
Noob Saibot - Shadow/All Black Ninja (hahaha,...they had noob before it became popular with the internet nerds, actually the name is backwards for tobias boon)

Did I miss any?

Ermac = an old pop code Error machine
meaning there was something wrong with the Arcade mahcine to call service...
Dont remeber how it got twisted into a chracter...

so the character really jumped on screen when there was an error with the machine? the issue of EGM i saw it in was the one that had the first pics ever of MK2 in the back of the issue, and the pics were hideous conditions.

i didn't even know the character really jumped on screen. the story that was in the EGM was that the guy actually faced the character. to my knowledge however, the character was just a phone and it was an image manipulation to get it looking like it was real. this was before the PS days.

EDIT: and the article i read about it had an actual picture of ermac on the screen , in his winning position, and it said "ERMAC WINS" on the screen. wish i could find the pic online somewhere!

and lol @ honkey's comment about noob haha. at first i didnt get that.

No, you couldn't actually play Ermac in MK2. It was just the "Error Macro" bug that spun into a rumor.

But Boon thought it was funny, so Ermac actually became a character (and a very cool one in MK: Deception)

the origin of it wasn't in MK2, it was in MK1. The pic i saw of him was from MK1. But after replies to the picture of him, tobias said it was a hoax and that it was a phony picture. it was a cool picture though heh, it looks legit to the common eye, especially in the days before photoshop.

Speaking of MKII, was it ever determined whether Kano or Sonya were playable?

Sorry for trying to hijack this thead.

I believe that was nothing more than a rumor

Sorry, I meant MK1.

And no, you couldn't play Kano or Sonya in MK2 either.

I finally found Johnny Cage & Sonya in MK: Deception the other day. You can't play as them, but they show up in Konquest mode (along with pretty much every single other MK character ever (even Stryker makes a cameo in the prison stage))

I have to bet that EGM did it on purpose. They "make up" something every year in their April issue as an April Fools joke - One of the first was a playable character in Street Fighter 2 called "Sheng Long". Lately they've done "Unlock Sonic & Tales in Super Smash Bro. Melee" and "Topless mode in DOA Volleyball".

They play with photoshop, make it look realistic, and then publish it. Usually they tell you a few issues later when they make fun of people who write in wondering why they can't make it work. If you read about this in EGM, chances are, they made it up.

According to that website, Smoke, Cyrax and Sektor were ninjas that were turned into cyborg ninjas.

no no no, that wasnt the case here. it was a little article that was sent in by a reader, the EGM people also were baffled at the whole thing. The next issue it was confirmed fake after EGM contacted midway and stuff.

and this wasn't around april fools, and it wasn't even a big deal in the magazine. in old school EGM's, they had these little articles in a blue part on the outter part of the pages with reviews, previews, etc. This was one of those little articles in the blue parts, spanning only 2 columns over 2 pages, 1 on the side of each page.

If if makes you feel better, i know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I think i still have that issue, as a matter of fact, but my EGM archive is at home, and i'm at school 🙁. But you're right, it was in a little sidebar and everything, exactly as you described it.

yea I remember it perfectly, and the excuse on the article for the picture being kinda blurry was that the game was in the back of an arcade and it was just a little dark there. haha i want the scan!!!
