I just wish the game had a more up-to-date combat system. I much prefer the Oblivion/Skyrim system in that if you hit someone with something...you hit them. In Morrowind, it more or less does an internal die roll based on your stats/items to determine if you actually hit them.

For example, let me go over how a typical cliff racer battle goes (and damn are there too many cliff racers!). Cliff racer flies in, makes annoying sounds, smacks you around a bit. You turn to fight and draw your weapon. MISS MISS MISS MISS HIT MISS MISS MISS MISS HIT MISS MISS MISS MISS HIT STUPID BIRD JUST DIE PLEASE MISS MISS MISS HIT.

Of course, it is a much older game, and it is much better than Oblivion or Skyrim IMO. It's not that the combat system is bad...just outdated.

Unfortunately, Morroblivion looks worse than this mod does, but has a more up-to-date system. Oh, and it performs worse. Tough decisions!

They claim oblivion was bigger but I think that was just marketing bullshit. I've spent plenty of time running around in both worlds. Try giving yourself 100 speed and 100 athletics in each. Morrowind takes a lot longer to run from top to bottom than Oblivion does left to right.

I'd like to correct you on one point. "More up to date combat system" isn't strictly speaking true. Different, i will grant you. More Consolized, absolutely. But there is perfect validity to hitting and missing being based on come game mechanic rather than how adept you are at mouse/controller control.

For me, I don't like combat systems that are based more on manual dexterity than they are on how good your character is supposed to be in combat. But then I generally gravitate more towards turn based games anyway, so...

It's a preference is all. I do not believe that "holistically" one system is better than the other. Just different. Your preference is the controller driven style. Mine is internal mechanics and 'To Hit' rolls.

My first Elder Scrolls game was Daggerfall back in 1996, I wasn't an RPG person at that time and what convinced me to try it was the open world, and the shiny Skeleton king on the box.

DAGGERFALL%20Box-cover%20(2).jpg

I loved it, I can't claim to have completed the main questline, or perhaps given it as much playtime as it deserved... but I enjoyed what I did play immensely.

Naturally I was all over Morrowind when it came out, loved that too. Wasn't so keen on Oblivion but it was 'aight.

Fallout 3 was a signal to me that Bethesda was starting to catch up to their aims with their results, and Skyrim is when their formula finally truly and fully clicked. Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion all had a lot going for them but to me Skyrim is where it finally reached perfection.

But Morrowind was fantastic, and I'd love to play through it all with the overhaul. I did install it all a while back, but frankly, and I know as a PC gamer this is awful to say... but frankly I wish I could use the xbox controller for PC to play it :(

It's a little wonky to try to use xpadder, etc... and the interface of Morrowind is just kind of odd at this point, I guess I'm just being way too picky but I just wish Bethesda would release their own updated version, even if the graphics weren't improved beyond supporting native widescreen, high resolution, etc, and adding XBox controller support with corresponding button icons, etc, that'd be preferable to me.

What I really liked about Morrowind was the control. I hate those kinds of games because of the controls, you basically sit back and watch them fight but Morrowind was like a first person shooter.

Well.... Looks nice, but I think I put enough time into it already.

I found several things that made the game easy:

1. Get something to put on your KB to make your character keep walking. Point them in a corner near a weak enemy and "sneak". You will level up to 100 fairly quickly and be able to run while sneaking. Hell, you can practically walk up to a guyin broad daylight without them noticing.

Thief, eat your heart out.

2. Get good at bartering, FAST. I got to the point where I could sell my stuff for more than I could buy it. I ended up going town to town cleaning everyone out.

3. Focus on a few things, like your armor proficiency, a melee weapon and bow. With stealth, you will own.

That is about it. I never got anything to work quite right spell-wise (except heal), and I would run and jump around everywhere I went to gain "run" and "jump" skill levels! ;)

The game was really good in some aspects, but once you passed a certain level, almost everyone was easy.

That said, two quick things I remember I did not like were: Strait arrow flight. They did not hear about "physics" back then.

Scaling difficulty. I know that you kind of need to do that to keep it interesting, but it gets frustrating when you go back "home" and have to fight of steroided wolves right out of the city walls because you are now 10 levels higher than at the start when you faced mildly disgruntled Labrador retrievers.

For my own personal interest, I would like to see how they remodeled the characters. The trees still have that funky look, but much better than the "sharp" limited polygonals of the original. It would be nice to see a few faces....

Also a plus.. you can actually play the game howver you want.. The Elder scroll games all seem to have a "trick" (many call it cheating) to level stuff.. you mention bartering. alos very eay to level.. early in game when you dont have a pack of crap you carry everywhere.. go into the local cave/dungeon and pick up every piece of crap. it all sells for nothing almost.. but every time you sell anything your skill goes up.. you can max it in a few trips..

I dont use the tricks much.. i prefer a more even (and yes, harder) game session.. but I like how the option to do that stufff is in the game.. at first i thought it was oversites by Beth.. but the sneak "trick" for leveling sneak has been in every game, they could sure have fixed it by now if they had wanted too..

if i had any complaints it would be about balance.. how light armour if maxed is just as good as heavy.. how you can use potions and enchants to make your character godlly.. again its coolits in the game and if I chose i can do it.. but sometimes you wonder if everybody is and youa re just playing it old school hardcore by not taking advantage of it. You get the "its int eh game, its ment to be played that way" and with the Elder scroll games, its probely correct.

Would you recommend the Overhaul or Morroblivion for a first time playthrough? I have beaten Skyrim, did most of the sidequests in Oblivion and played some Daggerfall when I was much younger if that helps. For some reason I missed out on Morrowind.

Classic Morrowind has fly and levitate and featherfall spells.
Morroblivion does not, making some areas of the game awkward unless you feel like cheating.

Does Morroblivion re-create the main games quests and everything too?

I was always under the impression that was just a cool mod for re-visiting Morrowind, but not for visiting it for the first time.

Either way, I played Morrowind a week ago.. got it to a custom resolution and tweaked the FOV to go along with true widescreen, and damn it looks pretty good, stock. The game had such a great artistic style to it.

Yeah, Morroblivion is more or less entirely done (all quests and everything). I had no idea until I randomly checked it recently.

I installed this mod and have added Galsiah's Character Development leveling mod. It seems to work fine now but do you think it might cause a problem with Overhaul down the road?
