Morpheus...a question about.

My goal has been to keep my computer clear of junk. I rarley use the internet and only install programs that I know I'll use. It's fairly new and I want it to reamian as trouble free as possible. So far it's still running great.

The probelm, my daughter now wants to get her music off Morpheus. I am very hesitant to want to allow the Morpheus program into my computer. I know little about it. I understand it is a file sharing program (which scares me), and being a musician, I not thrilled with the copyright issues. But, can anyone fill me in on the pros and cons of this monster? How intrusive is it? I have ADSL, someone said that my computer would be used as a hub to transfer files fast to other nearby locations. What's that all about?

I can't give you any info on security issues and the like about the program, but I can try to give you an overview of the what the program does. Basically, the program does serve has a 'hub' for sharing pretty much any kinds of files you want. When running the program, you are able to download files from other users running the program, as well as those other users are able to download files from you. YOU decide what files you want other people to download, and you can chose to not even let others download from you at all. When downloading and installing the program, it will create two icons on your desktop, the Morpheus icon, which loads the program of course, and another which is named 'My Shared Folder'. When you download files from Morpheus, be it music, videos, or software, it is automatically downloaded into the 'My Shared Folder'. It's this folder and this folder alone that other users on Morpheus can see and download from. So whatever is in that folder is all that other users can get from you. The Morpheus program has an options tool, where you can choose to not let anyone download from you, or only 2 at a time, or 3, or whatever, so that you don't have 20 people trying to download from you, hogging all your DSL bandwidth.

The Morpheus program has a LOT of users, so pretty finding whatever you want is a breeze. Hopefully this has helped you in the least bit, but I'm not the best of teachers. If you have any specific questions after this, feel free to ask.
 
be very carefull its not Morpheus its self but the people that share on it. I have just picked a two virus, although nav pick them up ( after they had infected the pc ) had to reformat to make sure its clean

WoodchuckCharlie, your explanation of the program was very good. You should look into writing software user manuals.
I use Morpheus on occasion to get music. I don't know of any particular security issues associated with it. To minimize any security problems I shut it down when I'm not using it. I also use Zone Alarm firewall, Norton Antivirus for viruses, and AdAware to check for spyware. I have downloaded the occasional virus, which NA fortunately caught every time.

I love Morpheus, but you might wanna try Kazaa instead. It's basically the same program on the same network, but I've found Kazaa to be a lot stabler then Morpheus. Also, just to let you know.. I've used this software basically since it first existed and I've never, ever downloaded a virus (Well, at least I think not. NAV hasn't found one yet). Also, it's not just the copyrighted music that you can get. You can get copyrighted movies, books, and software. The thing about this that I enjoy is, if I'm thinking about purchasing a piece of software or buying a book or renting a movie I can check it out first and see if I really like it or not. The copyright deal isn't something that you should worry about. You can control what stays and what doesn't just like anything else. Hope this helps ya. Just remember, Kazaa instead of Morpheus.
 
Kazaa has spyware, Morpheus don't. Morpheus has ads though, quite a few of 'em even, oh how I have Bonza Buddy!
There shouldn't be any special security issues with it, the one BBC reported some weeks ago were plain stupid: users who share a full drive run the risk of people getting things from all the drive! Oh boy, that's a security problem, people can get personal files from me if I choose to share 'em.
