I'm amused by how much he accuses them of talking over him when he does most of the talking. 🙂

The Mormons don't equip their young missionaries very well to deal with anybody who's got any basic training in scripture, doctrine or Christian theology. They do really well with someone who hasn't heard the basics of any type of Christianity.

We had a couple of fellas visit us and we invited them in for conversation. Nice guys. 🙂 They came back two or three times but after we got them to espouse the Catholic doctrine of original sin (do you believe A? Do you believe B? Then you believe C. They agreed, both in the premise, and then in the conclusion after thinking it over) and traded them a book of Mormon for Bonhoeffer's "Cost of Discipleship" they weren't allowed to come back. The Bonhoeffer book was returned by two male adult Mormons instead.

😀

Dietrich Bonhoeffer openly stood up to the Nazis in Germany during the Nazi reign, an incredibly brave and morally shining thing to do, and predictably paid with his life because he stood by his ideals.

I am deeply religious (spiritual), but I have no use for proselytizers who feel the need to hector others about what they should or shouldn't believe -- that is between each human being and their conception of the divine, or the void, whichever.

Along those lines, I have one ton of respect for intelligent, considered atheists. They have come by their appreciation of the cosmos honestly.

Whatever any one of us believe, not one of us knows. For me, the "face of God" is too huge for any one culture or cult or religion to know alone, kind of like the story of the blind men and the elephant.

I'll discuss the subject with anyone willing to respect my views as well, but mostly, I'm inclined to stand with Iris DeMent and let the mystery be.

Three things:

1) Their bike helmets looked like retard helmets.
2) Four-eyes couldn't contain himself and was basically told to shut the fuck up by the other Mormon.
3) The black guy's facial hair was ri-dic-u-lous.

Nice. Its always funny when you catch someone trying to evangelize theologically unprepared. I wonder what happened when those two though...

Some of our missionaries just... they just spout what they've been told without really learning it. But then again, the "priest" was being just as hypocritical as he was claiming the missionaries were. Oh well. They could argue that theological rhetoric all night until they were blue in the face and neither party would get anywhere.

Never went on a mission myself, but oh well.

Anytime a "preacher" tells you to check your brain at the door, you know there's something wrong with what he's saying.
Actually, that applies to anyone, not just false teachers and preachers.

And yet, they aggressively inflict themselves on as many strangers as they possibly can, each and every single day. Not cool.

Missions are as much a personal spiritual exploration as they are a teaching opportunity. I don't care who you are or how old you are, but no one will ever be prepared to answer every question that is posed to the questioner's satisfaction. I think missions are noble. They're not hurting anyone or promoting anything evil.

I have never met an aggressive Mormon. If you have, then he was truly a pitiful Mormon.

Mormon beliefs are crazy, but they are some of the nicest, happiest, and sincerely well meaning people out there.

Everyone loves to bash them, but honestly I don't find their beliefs any more far fetched than that of mainstream Christianity, Islam, or Judaism. I think people just like to bash Mormons because they are usually obviously satisfied with their faith, which most people truly aren't. Bashing another person's religion is just a shallow attempt to reassure your belief in your own religion.

You can say what you wish, but they are an aggressive imposition on the rest of us. I don't go knocking on your door, trying to convince you that what you hold in your heart is wrong but that I am right.

Again, you can play it any way you want, but I wouldn't be welcome in your home, aggressively promoting my views while dead nuts claiming that yours are in error, yet your think your young salesman are in mine.

NOT COOL.

Watch the video. It contained three tools. Two of them were Mormons. And they initiated the whole sorry exchange.

For some reason the video won't load for me.

If they were overly aggressive, then they are not acting as a proper Mormon should.

I agree with most of your post, but I think the Mormons take more heat than some of the other religions because (A) a significant core part of their beliefs are admittedly very recent, (B) they're a little more secretive and exclusive about their core practices and (C) they do adhere in practice very tightly to visible parts of their beliefs.

Meh... I let any one who wants to talk religion in my home. I think people are far too defensive when it comes to religion. I mean... our missionaries aren't telling you that your're wrong, but teaching you what we believe. Whether you agree or not is your own perogative, but the attitude is not "you're wrong and we're right". The message is, "we believe in X and want to share it with you."

Like I said... some people are just too defensive when it comes to religion. If you're not interested, that's cool. But these guys didn't initiate in an aggressive manner. They did become somewhat aggresive later in the debate, but this was because the "priest" started getting defensive and aggresive himself.

EDIT: The whole situation got to the point that it was counterproductive. When one person responds aggresively, the other party most of the time becomes aggresieve in return.

Without looking: It's that video of the two guys on bikes who get their nonsense answered with some more nonsense by a huge gangster looking guy who calls himself a pastor right?

First off, I don't wish to get into an extended debate or argument with you, or your religion.

Please go in peace and believe as you wish, just please give me the very same consideration.

Let me ask, do you let anyone who wants to talk politics into your home? Why or why not?

Do you let anyone who wants to talk life insurance into your home? Why or why not?

Do you let anyone who wants to talk social priorities such as NAMBLA (man/boy love, they are just as sincere as you are, you know) into your home? Why or why not?

Do you let any and every stranger with a pointed agenda into your home?

Really? I mean, REALLY?

Do YOU let anyone with the endorsed-in-your-post attitude of "we believe in X and want to share it with you" into your home? Pro-abortion, Sceintologists, Lesbian rights, UFO conspiracy theorists, the Socialist Workers Party?

You don't, do you.

There a reason people put up signs, "No Salesman". It's an imposition and an annoyance.

The very idea that I am so dim that I need YOUR unasked for religious guidance is an arrogant and aggressive imposition on your part.

It is, quite simply, NOT COOL.
