trau·ma Pronunciation Key (trôm, trou-)
n. pl. trau·mas or trau·ma·ta (-m-t)
A serious injury or shock to the body, as from violence or an accident.
An emotional wound or shock that creates substantial, lasting damage to the psychological development of a person, often leading to neurosis.
An event or situation that causes great distress and disruption.

I would have to say, yes it was a national trauma. Were you, as an individual traumatized? Maybe yes, maybe no...but as a nation, according to the definition, I think yes.

I would have to agree with him to a certain extent. I don't live in New York, nor do I know anyone involved in the attacks, so it didn't affect me as directly as it did others in the country, but I can't say that I wasn't upset or angered, among other feelings, about the entire situation.

however, in other parts of the contry, they can only relate to what they saw on tv, they weren't there, they didn't feel what most new yorkers felt. So i say, unless you lost someone in the attacks or knew someone, or lived in the city, it wasn't too traumatic. i mean even in queens, when i go back every weekend...people act as if nothing happened, sure they have the flags up and a show of pride but that was all...
His premise is false, that 'trauma' only results from immediately and directly being in the wake of a disaster like the WTC attacks when no psychologist would agree with that. Freeman forgets that Washington DC was also attacked and a plane load of people went down in Pennsylvania, and that families of the dead are scattered all over the US if not the world.

Comparatively, if you didn't lose someone or are not a New Yorker, then it isn't "as" traumatic, true. Things are rarely black and white.

And, I should care about what an actor says?
Honestly.
And, I should care about what you say?
Honestly.

Actors have opinions, just like you do. The difference is that what they say gets published nationally half the time :)

I always hate it when people jump all over actors or critics or whomever saying "Why do I care what they think?" It's not like what they are saying is the law, it?s just their freaking opinion, and they are entitled to it.

On topic, I somewhat agree. While the attack hurt the nation deeply, obviously it hurt New Yorkers more than anyone else.

(edit: and obviously somebody does care, otherwise a wire report wouldn't have been written up and this thread wouldn't have nearly 30 replies)

Is Freeman attempting to claim that, unless you actually witness thousands of people die in person, you cannot be affected in many of the same ways? There are some people who witnessed what happened and weren't moved. There are some who only watched it on television who feel as though they were there. Freeman should stick to acting....

It always amazes me the profound stupidity that often exudes from the mouths of celebrities...and some people hang on every word of celebs as though spending one's entire life pretending to be someone they're not must make a person all-wise and knowing. Most of these people can't even manage their own finances or other personal affairs!

<<you aren't kidding??

i have never experienced anything in my 36 years like i did on sept 11>>

Me either. To say it wasn't a national trauma is ridiculous. Was Pearl Harbor a national trauma in 1941? Of course it was. Our Pacific fleet, a source of great national pride, was severely damaged.
Same with the WTC. America has never, in modern history, been attacked like that on our home soil. Many people considered that impossible. They thought that terrorist attacks were something you see on the international news, not national news.
9/11 burst many millions of bubbles, and the reality that this could happen again is certainly traumatizing to many, many people.
