It's not a blanket statement.

Drugs don't ruins everyone's mind, just like religion doesn't ruin everyone's mind.

He is just saying that minds that are ruined by religion are worse off than those that were ruined by drugs.

You didn't miss much. It was a short article and I quoted the best part.

I have a lot of friends that live out there still, some of the nicest people you could meet. I'm not sure how anyone (Christian or whatever the WBC is) can hate people they don't even know so much.
