I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe with a 3500 A64 winnie and 2 sticks of PC4000 Ballistix RAM. I am having a hell of a time getting my memory to run above 230 MHz. There are others with the same mobo that I know that are having the same problems. I can OC my CPU up to 2.73 GHz but I cant get my memory to run any higher than 230. It doesnt matter if I run a divider, what my multi is or what FSB I am running, anything resulting in a RAM fequency above 230 and booting is a no go.

The most that I can set my VDIMM voltages is 2.9V. That is the most that my mobo will allow. I dont know if there are custom BIOS' out there but I am running the most current 1009.

If you are running an A64, read this . You do not need balistix there is little performance differance here and for overclockingregular crucial is the exact same stuff, except it has a differant SPD.

I find it to be silly when people spend big bucks on over clocking. It's counter productive to the original intent of overclocking a system in the first place. I see people spend $600 on various cr@p in order to get their 3500+ to run like a fx 53! Instead why didn't those morons just use that money for buying a faster processor to begin with? The whole reason the overclocking movement got started was because of economics. Don't be silly and waste your money on ram you do not need. If you want a faster bus try lowering the multipler and increaseing the FSB/HT. Your processor could be what is holding you back.

I appreciate the link but were you calling me a moron? I think I have done quite well with my hardware. I have read so many places were my mobo craps out anything over 280 FSB. I have had my best results with a multi of 9.5 and a FSB of 281. I bought this RAM because I wanted it and because I had the money. Don't chastise me for asking for help. You managed to offer absolutly no help at all. I asked for an answer and recieved what? Your opinion? I was asking wheather or not there was something I could do to get over the 230 hump with my setup or if I am at the cieling of my machine. Clearly you dont know the answer, therefore gave me an opinion not an answer.

I was not calling you a moron. I did not say "YOU moron", I just said moron and ment people in the past. Maybe I should be a bit more careful in how I use the word, I apologize for causing harm to your feelings.

What I am trying to say is Spending money to overclock is couterproductive and pointless. It's like going to the grocery store and paying for coupons.

You didnt hurt my feelings but it is frustrating that I cant reach the potential of my hardware. I love the setup that I have at the moment but I would like to be able to OC the RAM a bit more. It could be a number of things. Could be my memry controller, could be mt VIA chipset and it could be my RAM itself. Either way, I can do anything that I want with great stability, but when I do OC, it's frustrating. At leats I can game with the settings that I enjoy. It's good Googer, no hard feelings.

DID you try using a lower multipler and a higher FSB? Also sometimes a Card in your pci slot will prevent you from getting a higher FSB, so remove all you PCI cards and try it again.
DO both of those and let me know how things turn out.

The lowest multi I have used was 9.5. I have heard that half multis are not good for A64's but I have had no negative effects. I could try a 9 but my mobo does not like a FSB higher than 282. I can run everything stable as can be at 9.5x282 but at 283 it wont even boot. The problem that I have been having is when my RAM reaches about 230, no matter the fsb, multiplier, or mem divider, it wont go past the 230 threshold. I think the highest I went was 232 but I got some horrible corruption, even with my AGP/PCI lock at 66.6/33.3. I dont know, it is frustrating but I am happy with my success so far. I know its slower RAM but I have ran tests with my 1gb of crucial value pc2700 and it cant keep up. I wish it was pc3200 so the test wouldnt be so apples to oranges but its the best that I could do. I have had my CPU up to 2.73 GHz, I just wish I could get my RAM up to its peak as well.

That is correct and is true for Older Hammer and Newcasltle cores. If you are running Winchester it should not be as much of a problem.

Try removing all of your PCI cards and see if it can Net you any higher results. If the answer is yes, then put one in try it, if it works pull it out and try the next one. Do this untill you get negative results with one of the cards. You may have found the culpret there.

PS, Overclocking and F@H clients scare me because It produces errors that lead to bad scientific results

As far as PCI slots, I have a Audigy card in my lowest PCI slot, I will try removing it and seeing what happens. Thank you.

I also have that mobo and 3500+ winchester, i can use 240X10 easely 1:1 ram (ocz platinum rev 2.0), or 240X10.5. The highest i was able to achieve is 247*10.5 but it is not rock stable at that setting.
But can only go 230X11 for some obscure reason.
I think that mobo is limited by the chipset.

I bought a second a8v 3 weeks ago, this board with all my prior equipment (i just switched the board) will do 300*8 easely (memory at divider 5/6), also 250*10 memory at 1:1 2.5-3-3-7 1T. My 3500+ is limited at 2520 at 1.45 volts. This new board does not seem to limit the freq. of the ram like my first board. I do not know if it is because of the BIOS 1010.003 but it is bery welcome.
