If you'll have a car, take day trips. One fairly short one would be up the Columbia River Gorge. Drive East on 84. Very beautiful up there, waterfalls, etc.

Hiking to the top of Multnoma Falls is fun and it's a kickass view. So is the view from Crown Point.

Also fun to visit the hydroelectric dam and the fish hatchery that's near it. And I've heard that they finally reopened the Vista House, that's on the old highway (overlooking the current one). Kind of fun to drive stretches of the old highway.

Vista House? Is that the one that almost blacks out the entire neighborhood from it's power consuption of many thousands of christmas lights every year?

Don't think so. It's the museum on top of Crown Point. http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_150.php

If you want some big fireworks for the 4th, drive across the Columbia to Vancouver and take the 78th St. exit off I-5, turn right and head to the nearest fireworks stand (whichever one, there should be several). Practically all fireworks (except firecrackers) are legal, including the big mortar tubes. Fun stuff.
The fireworks stands in Oregon are lame (although not quite as bad as California). The nearest Indian Reservation that sells everything (but bombs) is 90 miles up I-5 past Centralia, WA (halfway to Seattle) and is usually heavily patrolled by cops... not worth it IMO.

A gorge trip is always fun. To get to Crown Point, head east on I-84 to Lewis & Clark exit (1st one past Troutdale, about 18 miles from downtown Portland), then south on Historic Columbia River Hwy. Follow the signs to Corbett, Crown Point is another 3 miles past. Then keep going further for the waterfalls and the gorge itself.

The fireworks megastore across the river in Washington has lots of stuff that's legal in Washington, but TONS of it is illegal in Oregon.

Is that Blackjack?
I know there used to be a fireworks store in Vancouver that was open year-round. We use to stop there on occasion to pick up roman candles, bottle rockets, and various other fireworks that are all illegal in Oregon. Of course, we would never bring them back to Oregon.😉

Yeah, fireworks are basically banned everywhere but the kinda ghetto places here in soCal. Is there no worry about starting forrest fires out there? I know lots of places here ban them because they start brushfires, and the sort.

We'll see tho, im not sure how much of a pyro she is. Im sure i'll be too drunk all weekend to even start thinking about playing with things that'll blow up.

Oh, the mortar tubes are fun as hell. "Fire in the hole!" Of course, I would never bring them back to Oregon and blow 'em off from my back deck at 2am in such a way that my neighbor would bang angrily on my door... 😉

Yeah, and I never bought m-80s (is that what those little crackers are called?) there and took them down to my in-laws' house and lit off the whole string at once. hehehe 😉

Hey do you know of any INDIAN RESERVATIONS near the OR/WA border?

If you're looking for fireworks...

There is a TINY indian reservation, I believe about Hood River, only on the Washington side... It's called "Cooks Landing".

If you drive down the road that winds along the Columbia on the washington side(I don't know what it's called), keep a look out on the right for a simple sign that say Cooks Landing. It's a small strip of land with 2 firework stands setup.. But they've got it all. 😀

I wish I remember more details, like at least which mile post it's at or something.. But I'm sure it's still there.

Sweet!

How different is the selection/prices from other places like the blackjack trailers, etc.?
I have no idea on price... It's been several years since I was there.

I still have several thousand fire crackers left... I doubt we spent over 100$.

Get there early if you want selection. We were there a few days before the 4th, and all the good things were gone.

If you want the best deals, go the day after the 4th.

Hey, I've been there! Forgot about it. It's ran by the Yakama tribe, and they also sell fresh-caught salmon there when in season (good stuff). It's on the Washington side about a mile or so west of the Bridge of the Gods. Take I-84 east to Cascade Locks (44 miles), pay the $1 toll to cross the bridge, then turn left on SR14 and go about a mile or so, driveway on your left. Or you can take SR14 on the WA side like you suggested and it'll be on your right just a bit before the bridge.
Run of the mill reservation fireworks. Black cats, bottle rockets, mortars, etc. No M-80s.

Thien Hong on Sandy Blvd. You CANNOT leave Portland without trying their Pepper Salted Squid. I repeat: You CANNOT leave Portland without trying their Pepper Salted Squid

I wonder if it's worth the trip if I just want black cats and bottle rockets? Actually I think bottle rockets aren't available at the other non-reservation fireworks stands.

They're only legal during specific dates around July 4 and January 1 and only in designated areas. You can't go out to eastern Oregon in the middle of the summer during fire season and expect not to get cited and fined for lighting off fireworks. Also, they're heavily regulated. Fireworks that move more than six feet from their originally lit position (roman candles, etc) and fireworks that leave the ground (mortars, bottle rockets, etc) are illegal.

Pretty much all that's legal either squeals or smokes or some combination of the two. They suck.

No M80s?

When we went, they were out.. But I picked up a boatload of M70s and like 10,000 fire crackers, amongst other things, lol.

Hmm.. When did you go Vic? Maybe something changed.

I must've went.. Wow, in like 1997? So I guess it has been quite a few years. Maybe they're not allowed to sell the big boom stuff anymore?

Real M-80s (or any firecracker with more than 50mg of explosive in it) are illegal under federal law, and so can't even be sold on Indian reservations. They might have the fake M-80s (which are more like M-40s, but still a lot more bang than a Black Cat), but possession or sale of the real thing is a felony anywhere inside the US, including on Indian Reservations. I know you can probably still get the real thing sometimes at some reservations by asking the right person and flashing a wad of money, but IMO it's not worth it as WSP patrols the reservations during the 4th season quite heavily these days, and getting caught can mean jail time.
I haven't been up there in a few years, can't recall how long, not since WA allowed the sale of mortars, etc. again, which IIRC was like 3-4 years ago.

Ahh, I see... So that's just what they were calling them.

I did think the "M70s" were sort've weak, lol.

But still much more powerful than a firecracker.. Would actually blow some water out of a 5 gallon bucket.. good times.
