Running more than 256 of memory on a win98 system.
Is that a waste of time?
Does win98 roll over at 256?
Is there a fix besides changing O.S.?
At these Prices I got to ask!
Building a new system.

Thanks.

I'm running 640MB. Extreme overkill, but what the heck. The system never even touches the swap file, and I'm letting Windows manage it w/o any special settings. My system DOES use more than 256 without a problem. Microsoft say that 512MB is the most that the 95/98 kernel can effectivally manage. Who cares, reboot once in awhile.

Also, there are numerous threads throughout the AnandTech forums on this.

Well, it really depends on what apps you are running in the computer, I regularly use more then 256MB or even 384MB, that's why I have 512MB installed in the system. but most people probably don't need that much RAM for daily usage.

not to be rude or anything, but it seems theres one new post about this every single day!
a little annoying if you ask me...

why don't ppl just read old posts, rather than post the same thing over and over?
personaly, i think it wastes the ppls time who care enough to help...
they've answered this question 10000 times at least in these forums.

My way of thinking is that right now ram is cheap so load up because the OS & programs of the future will probably need it ;)

Now now littleprince, cut the guy some slack. He is new here.:)

Kemoc, do a search for conservative swap file and make the change. You won't be sorry.
