What happens when you go over 24 drives in Windows? Has anyone ever tried it? I'm at 18 now and I'm tempted to make 7 more just to see what happens.

Edit: Apparently that's it. You're hosed after 24.

MS-DOS let you go beyond Z:, I forget what they were, they started going into symbols.

EDIT - I think that was an add-in with the Novell NetWare Client that mapped some drives to symbols.

Yep. You just can't map any more drives after "Z:". It's actually a huge PITA for big server environments.

mount drives to folders.

How to create a mounted drive
To mount a volume:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type compmgmt.msc in the Open box.
2. In the left pane, click Disk Management.
3. Right-click the partition or volume that you want to mount, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4. Click Add.
5. Click Mount in the following empty NTFS folder (if it is not already selected), and then use one of the following steps:
? Type the path to an empty folder on an NTFS volume, and then click OK.
? Click Browse, locate the empty NTFS folder, click OK, and then click OK.
? If you have not yet created an empty folder, click Browse, click New Folder to create an empty folder on an NTFS volume, type a name for the new folder, click OK, and then click OK.
6. Quit the Disk Management snap-in.

Backwards.

It's a huge PITA if your server environment is using 26 drive letters.

DFS is your friend.

Exactly. Why are you using 18 drive letters? :)

I think 5-6 was the most I've seen for a couple of TBs of data. Of course it was a SAN backend and it had a huge number of physicals presented as a single volume. Though DFS, mounting to folders, or creating larger logical volumes with software or hardware would be the way to go.

Using drive letters at all is a PITA =)

This is also true, but within a Windows environment...

Well, can you add more drives if you have the Spanish version of Windows?

Does Windows Vista use drive letters?
