Yeah, this is kind of a useless post, perhaps not; might explain some things for newcomers to the benchmarking game. But I just made a few tweaks that gained me 4000 3dmarks in 3DMark2001. How? Quality settings. Changed the mipmap settings and anisotropic filtering. That's it. My GF4 Ti4200 went from about 5300 to over 9600. Thing is, it looked pretty lousy, to me anyway.
Perhaps there should be a standard config to run with cards, like Anisotropic to Level 2, and Mipmap LOD set to 0.0, with user mipmaps disabled. That would also help give a much better view of quality.
