1) get Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and run a scan. Does it say you have weak/blank passwords? Yes/no.

2) Get the latest version of HJT from here and post another log, if you don't mind :)

A removal tool :) that looks promising! According to that page, Norton 2005 ought to be detecting this threat too, so go through EVERY part of the configuration options and ensure that Heuristic detection is at Maximum, scanning within compressed files is enabled, and that all the threat categories are checkmarked (adware, spyware, dialers, etc), then run another scan.

In the HJT log, there are some other suspicious-looking things, so ISTbar may be only one of your opponents here.

Recently, someone posted a tool that you pasted the log into and it "deciphered" the log for you. I can't find it. Do you know of it?

Ok, now dump your logfile into this page and note down all the yellow and red entries. If you don't know what they are, you'll want to nuke 'em in step #4 below. Also, look at the WeatherEye, Messenger Plus, and D-Tools, are those something you recognize? Don't be shy about nuking them if you don't know where they came from either.

0) download LSPFix and WinSockFix from here. If your Internet connection stops working after these procedures are all complete, use these. Also get that ISTbar removal tool from oldsmoboat's link above and have it ready too.

1) disable System Restore: how to disable it

2) start in Safe Mode

3) run that Norton scan again and delete the Registry entry as shown in oldsmoboat's link above

4) run HJT and do the Scan Only option, then checkmark the entries you took note of earlier

5) while in Safe Mode, it couldn't hurt to do a full system scan with Ad-Aware either

6) check manually to ensure that these directories and files are deleted before you exit Safe Mode, or else delete them yourself:

[*]C:\WINDOWS\oencli.exe
[*]C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe
[*]C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\

If you want to be extra-nasty, re-create the C:\Program Files\ISTsvc directory, right-click it, and use the Security tab to remove all permissions to it, even to SYSTEM

You have a software and/or hardware firewall, right? Very good thing to have these days :) Also, if you want to enhance your system's security, switch your account to a Limited-class account and stow away the Administrator powers in an account that you only use when you need Administrator powers. Make other users of your computer do likewise.

Well i got everything done that was said in safe mode and it did help a bit.

But istbar is still here, because of its weird ways of dissapearing in safe mode and reappearing in normal mode

Did you run the ISTbar removal tool that oldsmoboat linked to? How about locking its home folder with the NTFS Security? Be aware that locking the folder so it's not removable could be enough to trip the anti-spyware, just the fact that the folder exists. If you have ISTbar actually running, then that's another ball of wax.

If you did run the removal tool and the Norton and Ad-Aware scans, in Safe Mode, and ISTbar is still actually running then do this for me:

Go to Start > Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services. Open Services and do this:

1) click the Status header twice so that the started services are all on the top of the list

2) slide open the names and descriptions of the services

3) hit the PrintScrn button and paste an image of that list of Started services into Paint, then save it and either email it to me at tmcfadden * omnicast.net as a .BMP file, or host it somewhere (http://pics.bbzzdd.com for example) as a .JPG or .GIF file (.GIF is good for crisp text, but I'll take either). Here is an example of how it should look, more or less: link to my Win2000 services.

What I'm looking for is a Service that installs the ISTbar malware as a Windows component.

k, now if you had followed directions, all the Started ones would be on top and I could read the names and descriptions ;) but keep 'em coming, I'll try to see what I can see.

I don't see any bad 'uns in the Services list. Is ISTBar definitely executing? If you launch a scan with Norton, does it see it?

If it's WinXP Professional Edition, then you open a typical Windows Explorer window by double-clicking My Computer or something, and then you go to Tools > Folder Options, click the View tab, and go down to where you can uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing (recommended)." Whamo, you have the normal NTFS Security/Permissions/Ownership stuff available.

If it's WinXP Homeboy Edition, then I hear you can only get at the Security/Permissions/Ownership stuff if you start in Safe Mode. But I haven't got an XP Home rig to verify that with. Anyway, glad to hear you're winning the battle, that stuff is a real nuisance :p
