More Sound Issues

Ok, just got my Logitech Z-680's. GREAT system. However, a couple problems I have experienced...

First, I was using my onboard SPDIF optical out. Worked great...except the left channel seemed quiet. Played around with my 5.1 headphones (analog), and got the same effect. I used the speakers on a standalone dvd player and HD receiver and both of thoses worked great, so I know its not the headphones or speakers. Normal headphones/speakers sound like full volume on the left channel. Strange.

So I decide to plug in my Creative Live 5.1 Platinum. It has the optical connector on the front panel. However, that optical doesn't seem to work. It flickers on and off (mostly off) Example, in the speaker test, I see it trying to play front left, center, front right, etc. It is silent, then when it gets to front right I hear "right" and then the rest are silent. Tried an MP3, and the sound just comes and goes. I tried turning the AC3 encode option on and off, both with the same results.

So now I'm using the analog connectors. Sounds great, but I would really like the optical to work. (I got this really cool cable that is clear, and the ends light up when its in use) I might try the RCA digital connection, but I have a feeling its going to meet the same results as the optical.

Ideas?

Tried that. Optical made no difference where the slider was set. With analog, I could move it, and it made left louder, but it sounded...different. When I was playing around with my normal headphones and plugged them into the rear channel plug, the rear channel sounds different with music for example. The left in 5.1 sounded a lot like the rear channel by itself instead of the front channel.

Also, the Zalman 5.1 headphones sound kinda muffled. Any way to get a more crisp sound out of them?

My creative is reminding me why I took it out in the first place. Random lagging in audio playback. My card is a bit dated and I would kinda like and Audigy 2. Can I get a normal Audigy 2 for like, $70 and then use my old Live Drive IR front panel??? I like having the stuff on the front, but an Audigy 2 with one is like, $200.
