more ram vs. fast ram

I moved to 8gb of DDR2 not long ago and sometimes things feel sluggish in a lean system (software wise). Granted, I did have the defrag-crash issue I posted in computer help, so maybe that messed up something, but I need to find out for sure. My question is, did I make a mistake in buying more (quantity) slower ram instead of getting 4gb of faster ram? Thanks for any advice.
 
It would be helpful to know all your system specs.

Since you had a defragging issue I would consider the hard drive to be a possible culprit as well.
