This is true, but look at the other side of this. Last year, the 6800GT was introduced at $400 and it stayed close to that for almost 6 months. Everyone was crying "pricedrop", which never really happened. Fast forward to this year, NV launches the 7800GT on Aug 11 with an MSRP of $449. Newegg right now has an eVGA 7800GT for sale for $299 (33% drop in 4 months). Additionally, the egg has a Radeon X1800XL for $324 - a full $200 less then their cheapest X1800XT.

Sure, the absolute top end gear is very expensive, but if you go a slight bit below that you can get yourself into a very nice price/performance ratio. The top end should be expensive IMO. Buying the absolute top of the line card should put you into a sort of elite crowd that wear a badge of pride/shame/stupidity (depending on how you look at it). It is this way with every enthusiast item... why not video cards?
