Anyone heard that the PS3 is going to be alot like the original Divx? Not the cool new version of Divx but the crappy horrible version of Divx that several big companies like Disney tried shoving down our throats.

I was watching G4 and caught some info where they are stating that once a game is played on a certain system it sets a code to that system and from then on can only be played on that system. So no game rentals, no loaners, and you will never be able to sell your games.

My question is, if this is true, does it change anyones opinion on purchasing one? If it is true there is no way in hell I will purchase one. There was much celebration when the evil that was Divx died and for good reason. It is only another way to manipulate and rip off the consumer. Never being able to sell or trade games alone is a huge thing imo and a very very bad one.

/me rolls up newspaper and smacks Sony exec, who thought this up, over the head. Bad Sony exec, bad dog.

Edit: Original Divx Info

Well given that if as the guy states that games should only cost as much as dvds then this would not be as big a issue to me. But considering games cost closer to $50 and many new games are rising above that then this is just plain out ludicrious and will definatly hurt the PS3 if it happens.

I dont see how it can happen and the PS3 remain even slightly competitive. If you can rent sell and trade used 360 and Revolution games but you cant on the PS3 thats going to weigh heavily into many gamers decision on what to purchase. I mean just look at the original Divx, it was such a huge frustration by the public that it was dead before it ever really got started. Which imo was a good thing. I really hope Sony looks at Divx as an example.

This is from the original article:

Does Sony plan to employ this technology in the PlayStation 3? Not likely.

Remember, just because Sony applies for a patent for something doesn't mean they will implement it; certainly not on a whim without thinking of the ramifications first...
