More proof that Microsoft Windows Defender / MSE suck badly

Horrible, I pity anyone who uses them on his/her computer and *think* it works great it's free whooopie!! I have viruses lurking in my computer and I don't even know about it :whiste:

It's definitely not the best product available on the market, but it's much better than nothing at all. It's also extremely unobtrusive.

I've had it infect my small sister's computer badly just 4 months bad and everytime I clicked remove the viruses, it would say it removed them then pop up another message saying it found them again.

the worse thing is, they weren't actually viruses just a few keygens that I know 100% are safe so they were false positives that it failed to even delete.

I checked those files on Virus Total and they are false positives

who cares about MSE? there are better free options, even Kaspersky is free after rebate

I usually have a personal rule that if an anti-virus program fails to detect a piece of malware before it gets on the system, then I'm not trusting it to remove said malware.

I tend to agree with this,
I have awful memories from more than a decade ago dealing with McAfee and Norton which were paid and quite a pain to use, to heavy and unnecessary, MSE has been OK for me most of the time,

but looking at the list, AVG is supposedly the best free AV? maybe I will give it a chance.

I'm testing out AVG 2013 IS,so far its been solid,seems lightweight and no issues on my Win8 x64 Pro even in gaming ,they added Quick Tune to it(on all paid versions) which adds registry error fixer,short broken links fixer,junk files cleaner etc..it did find some more stuff then CCleaner so seems to be working ok.

Avast and AVG are my top two free favourites.

I would advice you not to use registry stuff built into these security solutions.

I had BullGuard Internet Security before and its registry cleaner fuxored up my Office 2010 installation every program would seem like its reinstalling again upon first launch

best leave the registry cleaning to CCleaner as it's very safe and conservative

I'm pretty savy with registry(old dog here) ,I use both CCleaner and Quick Tune(which is their basic version) anyway no issues in a month of testing so thumbs up :thumbsup: .

It seems AVG really did do a whole redesign on their 2013 range,sure it looks bit like Win8 style but very positive so far under the hood improvements.
