More Prom Shens - Modesty Ponchos FTW!!!

https://www.freep.com/story/news/lo...-out-dearborn-divine-child-hs-prom/566943002/

Everything old is new again... Are we really back in 1955 McFly? I went to this prom at this high school in the 80's and somehow this wasn't a problem back then...

Officials at one Catholic high school in metro Detroit are planning to dole out "modesty ponchos" to girls whose prom dresses are deemed too revealing.

The ponchos recently appeared on display at Divine Child High School in Dearborn. A nearby note reads: "If your dress does not meet our Formal Dance Dress Requirements — no problem! We've got you covered — literally. This is our Modesty Poncho, which you'll be given at the door." The note ends with a smiley face.

A "theology" teacher was pushing this idea. BTW the same school has suspended a student for criticizing school polices on social media.

I went to a Catholic high school. The modest dress code was why girls wanted to be cheerleaders. Street clothes had to be somewhat modest. The cheerleading uniforms allowed the girls to wave their underwear at the world. We had separate cheerleading squads for football, basketball, hockey, swim team, chess club, math team, whatever. Basically, if you were a girl, you could be a cheerleader and dress like a skank every game day.

And neither were kids shooting up their schools, zero tolerance for stupid stuff, police in schools for enforcement also known as safety officers, metal detectors in schools, etc., etc. also known as the good old days.

Catholic High School. That says it all.

Then it seems rather ironic that the standard catholic school attire for girls is a relatively short skirt. Typically these schools have minimum length requirements for the skirt, but whatever is the minimum, it's well above the knee. There's a reason "Catholic school girls" is a common theme in porn... I always assumed that this dress code was designed by the men (priests?) who run the schools. Because they're hard up pervs.

Kind of but there's plenty of porn out there that's far more revealing. Or just go to the beach. But something about the taboo and pushing the boundaries makes it more appealing. I'm in support of boundaries. There should be some moral line drawn between what's sexual and what isn't. Not because those boundaries have any objective reality behind them. They're not totally arbitrary, but that doesn't make them sensical either. But because it's healthy function for society to have some signal where sexuality is prohibited and with it the capacity to push boundaries and signal sexuality short of actual sex.

The '80s were also a horrible time for schoolkids if you were anything but straight and Christian (and often if you were non-white), so I wouldn't wax too poetically about the "good old days."

I went to three proms in the 80's and it wasn't a problem because the dresses were nothing like they are now. Most girls went for the frilly pink taffeta full length jobbies that were cotillion-ready like this

Whoever had the biggest dress and the biggest hair won. Now it's a contest to see who can get away with the sluttiest dress.

"Taffeta, darling"

Remind me again. Are these the same people who rail against Muslim women for covering up?

I've volunteered with my wife as a prom chaperone for schools my wife has worked at for quite awhile now (among other dances, sports, charity events etc). Public vs private Christian school, poor inner city vs rich white suburbia and dress codes for dances was the norm. In all the schools they also used unappealing articles of clothing as a deterrent. Poor Detroit public school went to Goodwill and bought ratty looking sweatshirts and sweatpants to hand out if the dresses didn't meet code. Private christian school has ugly looking jackets and slacks. (I don't remember what the suburbia school used atm) All the schools found the threat of a student having to wear these was far more effective than just enforcing the dress code alone. And girls will try and go light years beyond what is appropriate. We're talking dresses so short that if she does anything but stand still you'll know what kind of underwear she's wearing or so low cut there is no way there won't be a nip slip during the evening.

Meh - while as ridiculous as it is, I don't have much of a problem with it. Private religious school so it's not shocking and entirely within their right and their M.O. to do so.
I see what the girls at my kids' proms wear (public school) and damn... All I can say is girls did not dress like that back in my day.
