More problems with Universities protecting sensitive data

Non PCI compliant sites taking payments? SSN, DOB and Bank Account info being very poorly 'secured'? Just another day of me working with higher education I guess. I continue to struggle with why they think this is ok given the all the press out there on breaches and leaks.

Companies/organizations simply don't care about securing user data, because there is zero liability to them. Heck, it's legal for them to sell your information, every company does it now. It's ridiculous really.

There would need to be more regulations, but the government is just as bad, they spy on everyone so if companies are leaking info left and right it just makes their job easier. It would be counter intuitive to them to actually hold companies liable for user information security.
