More Pirates!

4 new boats have been taken hostage by Somali pirates of the Somalian coast. It's unfortunate, but all I can think is that we need to do the same thing to these fuckers that we did to the last ones. They'll get the message if we stay the course!

Edit: CNN Link to Greek ship story

With as many desperate somalis out there as there are, and as easy as it is to get a boat big enough for a crew of 5 and some weapons, I'm surprised its not happening more. We might have NFO somalia.

Simple solution...arm the boat crews or hire armed security. You don't have to give them a howitzer but decent sized small arms should be enough to keep pirates from boarding large vessels.

It's like a repeat of the 17th century. You let these pirates take your ships and you pay their ransoms then they are just going to keep taking your ships and demanding ransoms...

I'm not 100% on this, but I thought international law prevented merchant ships from carrying weapons during peacetime. I think they can have water cannons and stuff like that, but nothing lethal like firearms.

I know. That's why I'm saying they should be allowed small arms. An unarmed vessel worth millions of dollars makes for too tempting a target for what is essentially a bunch of ragtag bunch of hooligans.

Wasn't always like this... Backstory:

If it's true it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Italy (and to a lesser extent England) fucked up that particular corner of Africa pretty badly over the years.

The US should get involved to protect US flagged/owned shipping or rescue US citizens. The Europeans created this mess in more ways than one, they can lend the larger hand in fixing it.

Well I don't know what governs stuff like this (Geneva conventions, maybe?), but changing the laws to allow it probably wouldn't be a trivial matter.

I'm honestly curious as to how they are getting onto the ships and taking it over. I would think there's at least a 25 person crew on a ship so large. 5 Pirates climbing a ladder that's 25 decks high isn't going to go unnoticed. That and why aren't the captains carrying firearms? Airline pilots are able to do so.

Once guys with assault rifles and RPGs come along side your ship, you're in deep doodoo. Unless you are better armed than they are (and these ships aren't, because of laws and practical reasons), you've already lost.

I think if we can't arm the crews, the least we can do is give them ninjas. (you know pirates vs ninjas)

EDIT: TW1164 beat me to it 🙂

Doesn't sound like Peace Time to me with all this going on. I'm sure no one would complain about protecting your own ship. If I was in danger of that, I'd sure stock up my ship with hired guns. No one else is doing anything to stop it.

Yup. The crew of the Maersk fought off the pirates with things like icepicks.

Welcome to the next Iraq.

I was just thinking that. Somolia is going to end up getting invaded.

Maybe not invaded but the docks and boats that the pirates have been using may suddenly be in a billion pieces one night.

What happened to the acoustical weapon the navy was testing? You pointed it at a pirate ship coming your way and it caused such intense discomfort they had to turn away because the sound was so unbearable (caused nausea, vomiting, etc).

But seriously, arming the ships would end all this.
